New Babies

Thanks for your warm welcome.

My husband and I have 8 beautiful adult budgies and a pair have recently had 4 babies, 3 of whom have survived. These are our first babies so we are very unsure of what to do. We have an aviary with nesting boxes at the very top. This morning we found one of the babies (about 5 weeks old) on the floor of the aviary. It still can't fly and we are not sure what to do. It is climbing the wire and then falling down and we are worried it will hurt itself. Should we put it back in the nesting box/should we leave it on the floor of the aviary?

Could someone please tell me how long does it take for them to fly once they are out of the nesting box and also is it normal for them to fall to the floor of the aviary like that?

Thanks.

i dont colony breed so im unsure about if its safe on floor but i would put it in its nest again

and watch to see the reaction of parents

for about half hour to be sure they dont reject it

it should fly at about 6 to seven weeks sometimes earlier

it should be fine just for now try that if it doesnt work someone else should have better advice for you

i only cage breed  so can leave on floor in your situation

but just pop it back it will come out again im sure of that

Are you sure its 5 weeks old ? As a 5 week old should well be able to glide to the aviary floor okay and learn to fly ( if not already flying ) within a few days. If not FULLY FEATHERED. put it back in the nestbox.

It's fine. Maybe put a few low branches in? At 4-5 weeks budgies fledge and start to come out of the nesting box. Have some food and water on the ground. If you are really worried put it back in but if it happens again just keep an eye on it and leave it.Also recently in a public avairy I spotted 2 chicks on the ground. They are fine now.

I had one fall from a shelf at 4 weeks (uninjured) but it could flutter around, I put it back in box and out it came again. I had spare cage by this and moved whole family into that. If you can't cage them check to see others aren't attacking it on the floor and parents are coming down to feed it or watch to see if it can feed by itself.

The others will most likely do the same thing. It will need access to food and water, shallow dish only. Good luck.

p.s.

Definitely follow Kaz's adv. if its not feathered.

Thanks guys.

Guess what, I put it back in the nesting box and today it is on the floor again. Obviously thats where it wants to be! It is totally feathered and appears to be feeding itself, although I think the dad is still feeding it as well. I'll just keep an eye on it. I don't think any other birds have pushed it out as the mum and dad are still pretty protective. Unless of course one of the other babies has pushed it out as they are all poking their heads out and one other baby is almost coming out half way.

It still doesn't seem to be able to fly but I'm sure it will soon.

Thanks again.

Great news Gina, if it's out and Dad still on the job nothing to worry about, they get very inquisitive early, I've got three popping in and out from box into cage but they sneak back in for security, I suppose. Good luck with the rest, you know what to expect now.
