Posted October 3, 200915 yr Hi all, I was checking breeding cages to-day, heard odd noise from non-breeders. Found Grey Cock bird making a squeaky door noise. Grabbed him into isolation cage in garage. Treated him with, heat lamp, sulphadim to beak and water also 2 drops Ivomec to neck. Also caught all birds treated them with Ivomec as a precaution. Have kept an eye on Grey, he kept squeaking for a while it's now only 3-4 hours since I gave him treatment. Queak seems to have stopped and he is calling to birds in aviary he can hear them from garage. I thought respiratory infection when I found him, no wet floors etc. Any idea's what could be cause, would it improve this quickly? He doesn't seem sickly not fluffed etc. but don't know where to go with him. Don't want to risk others in aviary. Thank's for any help.
October 3, 200915 yr Without hearing the squeak its hard to know. cocks are very good mimickers so he may be copying an environmental noise. Odd noises can also be air sac mites, air sac injury, respiratory issues etc. Hopefully its just him being a clever boy, but while you work it out, you have done everything right.

Hi Liv, thanks for reply. It's a definite respiratory noise, I had a couple, ages ago, that died within 24hrs with similar noise. Haven't had anything since we paved floor so this was out of the blue. I've just noticed he's got a few pin feathers coming on his head. Could moulting cause this type of thing? He hasn't been breeding so it's not that.
October 3, 200915 yr Couple of things apart from respiratory issues..............air sac mites ( solved by spot on ivermectin.......you will notice overnight improvement ) and also thyroid issues solved by giving aqueous iodine in the water. BUT of course you need to determine which squeaky voice issue this bird actually has.

In the water they would all get it, could they get too much with both? Bird is good to-day no sign of squeak now and alert etc. don't know how long to isolate him if he's improved now. thanks again for advice.

If he has improved due to the ivomec you used then it was airsac mites and if so...you need to do all the birds.

Well not good news, my Opaline was doing really well, lively, no squeak, eating etc. This morning found him dead on the floor.
