Sick Budgie?

Featured Replies

I recently bought a beautiful new budgie. I was starting to quarantine him but my parents didn't let me for some reason. I have them together but I have noticed that Marigold, the female, has been acting oddly. She sometimes has slightly puffed feathers(only slightly) though this may be due to the sudden change in the weather ( I've only just moved her outside) and her droppings have also changed from darkish to sort of greenish. This may be due to a change in her diet ( i recently introduced powdered cuttlefish bone mixed in with seed). When she thinks I'm not looking she closes her eyes a bit. Am I over-reacting? one of my budgies died during the holidays while staying at a friends place and I don't want her to be sick.

Remove her to an inside cage with a warm lamp near the cage ( 40 watt globe...not energy saver globe ) ...............

QUARANTINE is for a very very good reason. This kind of thing being one of them :)

I tried to quarantine but my Dad asked me why they were seperate and I told him I was quarantining but he just said that it was a waste of money and that they weren't spending $400 on a big one so that one of them could sit in the smaller cage and put her in with the other one! I really did try to ague Kaz!She's only fluffed up when she's outside, her poops have returned to normal and as for the closing of her eyes, I haven't seen her close them at all. She's very chirpy and energetic, at this moment she's screeching because she can't see her new buddie and dancing on my shoulder! I think I must have been overeacting, but I'll keep an eye on her anyway. She did have a bit of a shock yesterday, she was outside, sitting on my finger, suddenly the wind blew, and her mate screeched and she took off! She flew higher than the roof and I thought that she was going to land onto it, but thankfully she didn't. I suppose some of it is my fault so now she is only allowed outside in sight of her cage(she flys back to it if she can see it .)

Regarding quarantine... you need to get your parents to read some of the info about it on here. It's very important, especially if you have noticed one of your birds looking ill. Also, if your Dad is concerned about having a $400 cage with one bird a waste of money, then imagine how he will feel when it's empty if both your birds become sick and die!?!? They are also very good at hiding their illness', so I'd be very careful.

I also see you mention you get your birds out of the cage outside :) NOT a good idea. Many a bird has been lost and not come back because of this... even if they are young and 'can't fly' or their wings have been clipped. I'd suggest only letting them out INSIDE!

I'm trying to keep them seperate as much as possible anyway. I only let one of the birds outside and I'm very careful with her but thanks anyway.

Keeping them separate as much as possible is pointless... if they are together at all, there is a pretty good chance the other one will get sick.

I know, but Iwent to my friends house and while I was gone Mum and Dad let them back together. I try to tell them about quarantine but Mum just said that my female was lovestruck!

i think if you cant over come your parents opinion just buy all your birds at one time from one place that way they will be quarantined together :)

if you want to breed your birds i would not be breeding one pair 3 at the least put up i always say

so you need six birds before you start

if they both together

go get some( oxy b B) or( sulfa a ) they are both all round treatment that way you can treat them both with just in case they are unwell

then they will be treated for most common illnesses regardless and you can stop worrying

put a tarp around cage to keep chill of night off them

they need to be treated for whole treatment recommended not just once and you need to read instructions and follow them to a t  good luck

I've shown Mum but not Dad now. The female is active and sits on a perch with one leg except if she's flying around or eating or even moving up and down the perches.
