Love At First Sight

Hey guys, my new budgie has completely fallen for my hen, he screeches whenever he can't see her, so I'm planning on breeding them.

Wait until you have finished quarantine and your hen is feeling 1000% healthy. Breeding will brings out minor or latent illnesses which only end in devastation by either the parents dieing or the chicks suffering.

Did you not to a quaratine as suggested?

How old are both your birds?

I agree with all advice. You dont breed birds as soon as you get home as they need to settle from the stresses of being caught, sold, transported, new food, new friends etc.

QUARANTINE too, not straight in with the existing birds.

How old are they ?

Budgies in the wild live in a huge flock. There is safety in numbers. A bird separated from the flock is easy prey for predators to hunt. The flock is safety. They don't really understand being by themselves if they've grown up with all their friends (in the aviary and then the pet store). Birds in a flock call out to each other so they know they're still safe. This is probably what's happening to your budgie, he is alone and he thinks he's in danger without all the members of his flock. That's why he is "in love", or rather he want his flock so he can feel safe. It happens to all new budgies if there's one already in the house, it makes no difference if they are both males or both females or not.

Despite this we MUST quarantine. It may feel cruel or seem a waste of time, but trust me it can save both bird's lives! By quarantining we can find out if the new bird is sick and get it treated, and it won't have passed it onto the old bird that you probably love a lot. As others have stressed quarantine is extremely important.

I am quaranting and I did say that I was planning on breeding them but not right away. They are both more than a year old!

You said in your other topic that you werent quarantining and that your parents wouldnt let you or something and that your parents put them together

I was starting to quarantine him but my parents didn't let me for some reason
I went to my friends house and while I was gone Mum and Dad let them back together. I try to tell them about quarantine but Mum just said that my female was lovestruck!

I tried to quarantine but my Dad asked me why they were seperate and I told him I was quarantining but he just said that it was a waste of money and that they weren't spending $400 on a big one so that one of them could sit in the smaller cage and put her in with the other one!

:D

Ratzy...please read the above link...with my first proper breeding attempt my hen laid 6 eggs 1 hatched and she ended up at the vet after fighting with the cock when the chick was 4 weeks old, I took her to the vet as she had a gash near her eye.....$70 later she is on the mend....but if mum and dad don't understand the reason for Quarentine, will they take you and your bird to the vet and fork out the dollars??

I'm 42 years old and I can afford to fund my "hobby", I have been on this site since April 08 and read FAQ's etc for months prior to even thinking about breeding properly...so even after a full year of reading and asking questions I still am "new" at all this with very limited knowledge...

Any of the breeders on this site will tell you it's not as simple as putting 2 birds together and ending up with beautiful chicks....

I wish you all the best....

I've only had to go to the vet once and mum and dad paid.

Then you are very lucky, so unless you know how to raise young birds that have been rejected by the parents you will rely on vets as I just did, $160.00 later with not even a baby bird left.....

So glad that your parents will pay...

Good luck

Keeping them seperate even though Mum and Dad think it is silly.

Hi Ratzy, How are things now? Any chance Mum & Dad could read some of the advice others have given to you? Maybe then they would understand things a bit better. It's worth a try. Otherwise try to follow the advice you get here and do the best you can for your birds. :D
