Posted October 1, 200915 yr So this plan has only really been a plan for about a week.. So it is nowhere near happening at the moment.. I decided I wnated to do this because the last pet shop in my area is up so sale and in the actual town I live in at the moment there isn't and never has been one.. My main problem has been that I haven't been able to find wholesalers. I've been able to get in contact with all kinds of pet breeders, But finding anything else is proving rather difficult.. I also need atleast 1 aviary and 2 guinea pig hutches like this one I have done so much maths today.. I think my brain is going to explode..
October 1, 200915 yr Im sorta curious as to why you might consider opening a pet shop? Do you have business experience or qualifications? Animal husbandry? Have you any previous experience? I think its quite a massive undertaking! I certainly wouldn't be putting my hand up to do it lol. I hope it works out for you if this is what you really want. What is your main goal/hope/desire for opening a pet store?
October 1, 200915 yr if i was you and you wanted a pet shop id buy a up running one and revamp it before reopening they are very hard to keep up and only just make their money back think alot about it sunshine and resurch everything ask another pet shop if you can discuss stuff like books and taxes also where they may get wholesale items just to see the costs you wioll indure also remember you need certain lisances to sell certain animals dont jump then relize you tied a concreate block to your ankle good luck if it happens remember dreams are the seeds of reality
October 1, 200915 yr GB gives good advice. I have helped a friend run a pet show many years ago. Livestock will if not moved on quickly drain your bank account faster than anything. It costs a lot of money to feed birds, dogs, cats etc. Seriously take you time looking into it. Check with your council on by-laws etc and as GB says you need to look at certain licensing information depending on what you want to sell. Good luck and good luck in what ever choice you make.
October 2, 200915 yr Author I have pretty much everything sorted with breeders and wholesaler now. And like GB said, buying one that is already up and running is a definate part of my plan at the moment. There are two that I know of that are up for sale. Dean, I'm starting Cert. 2 in Animal studies in February and after that I am doing Diploma of Vet. Nursing. My husband is currently doing a business management course.
October 2, 200915 yr The petshop where I got "Eagle" has changed hands twice since. The current owners specialize in birds, in the past supplying them to petshops. They happily trade with other breeders and this keeps their stock fresh. The establishment was rundown [perhaps a good thing, allows new direction] when the new owners took over three or four months ago, but friends they have become and recently told me the business has now more than quadrupled it's turnover. Being a wholesaler of birds seems to have been a huge bonus for them. Start buying some breeding pairs and get the show rolling??? Good luck.
October 2, 200915 yr the one near me been for sale for while its a great store if wanting to revamp loads of potential and great turn over of all animals Ginni pigs dogs rabbits birds of various types fish and a world of pet supply's i think its still for sale ?? not sure sounds like you have it right mate good luck and if you need a person to clean animals and feed ect i will put my hand up for a few days of free labor a week for a few month to help you on your feet if you ever get stuck your not to far from myself if i remember rightly and id be happy to help (with no thought or suggestion of a job just simply till you can find someone your happy with call it voluntary work if you like ) offers their i would want nothing in return just to see you succeed would be enough Edited October 2, 200915 yr by GenericBlue
October 3, 200915 yr Why don't you (if you do end up going ahead with your plan/dream ) see if you can make arrangements with animal rescue places (like the ones on Petrescue) and sell unwanted kittens and puppies? Once you get a reputation for doing the right thing, and not selling cats and dogs from breeding farms, you might find that business will be booming
October 3, 200915 yr I am very surprised, the anti pet shop members, havent given this thread a shake. They al must of gone onto, other projects.
October 4, 200915 yr I am very surprised, the anti pet shop members, havent given this thread a shake. They al must ofgone onto, other projects. :hap: this is a new pet shop not a running one got to give it a chance before burning it down macka and dont go into rehousing pets it will literally come back and bit you in the bumb  although a notice board with pets whom need new homes is good idea and a lost dogs home list of animals whom need to be loved but retailing them thats a bad idea bad bad bad
