Moulting

Hi All...

I understand that budgies moult a few times a year.....does anyone keep a record of when each bird moults?

I ask this because my DEC cock that is in a breeding cage at the moment with a hen with 5 eggs I have noticed is starting to moult......Do you keep a track of when each bird is going to moult?

I know they should not breed when moulting, but when he was paired up weeks ago there was no sign.....

How do the experienced breeders deal with this? And what should I do now....I will make sure he gets extra veg and egg and biscuit.....anything else I can do, and how can I prevent this happening in the future?

Thanks in advance.

Anne

Thats a pity he is moulting now. I personally would pull out any breeding birds who were moulting as moulting is hard enough without adding breeding to the equasion. A Change of seed will force a moult...has there been any change of diet for him in the breeding cage ?

No Kaz....same seed - veg - egg and biscuit.....

Do you think I should take him out? Will the hen manage on her own?

Can the hen manage on her own ? Yes, but can you foster the eggs into another nest ?

I have 2 others paired up, but I only paired them up on Friday.....

I have had the hens in the breeding cages for 2 weeks, but only put the cocks in yesterday...

Then you cannot foster eggs. I would pull him out and later on you can candle the eggs so you know how many are likely to hatch.........and help her all you can with easy food.
