Thanks so much Kaz and I am very happy that I finally seem to be getting the grasp on some different varities :(

Kaz just wondering if this is an iris ring? it is from one of the pieds 100_7117.jpg

I saved the pik and zoomed in.....looks like an iris ring to me....got a better picture ?

thanks kaz they were not very close pics and their head spots are not a nice roundish spot it blends into the rest of the body thats why I was leaning towards recessive but then I found the picture with the iris ring

number 6 does not have iris rings which I think is something dominants have, it does look like a dom in the photo with the head patch going on but has full black eyes the other two yellow ones do have the iris rings though

i say its a young hen dom but im not always right i go with dom to young for rings

It's fun to have posts like these where we can test our knowledge :)

Before I looked at the answers, my thoughts on the recessives were: 2 DF dom pieds and 1 SF dom pied.

That seems to go along with what the others have said. Yay! :)

didn't know that dom pieds were not born with iris rings thought I had that one down and could tell between dom and rec obviously will be harder with the littler ones if they don't have the iris ring from birth...... bugger

1/ Spangle sky blue

2/ Spangle green

3/ Opaline sky blue

4 & 5/ Both are double factor dominant pieds

6/ Dominant pied (the bird next to it is a recessive pied)

7/ Greywing green

:) yes a winner :)

df doms look like rec pies so its hard to tell when young but after their second molt you can always be sure because sometimes even after first moult the iris rings do not come in birds maturure diffrently as do we humans

as for dom pieds a good indication is their full wings from the v down cut short at the first or seconed flights

rec usually have more spasmatic markings

its the mixed pieds that are a pain in the ......

also spangles with the pied mark that are not pied that one gets me everytime

they look like they could be spangle doms with full wing markings bar the flights but..... not grrrrrrrrrrrrr
