Hi everyone, my name is Landau, I'm from Lake Macquarie(30mins south of Newcastle) NSW. I'm new to the site and relatively new to Budgies.

The Kids and I picked up our Budgie "Bender" 2weeks ago. Benders' approximately 6weeks old, he's mainly white with sky blue on his lower back and belly(I'll post pics soon), he's fit into the family really well with his easy going nature.

FAQs has been great to read, but it's a little early to try and get my head around genetics. I'm really interested in learning about the colours and variations. I have picked up a few bits and peices from people posting pics with descriptions but I still don't even know what a pied is :) !!!

I'm planning on starting up a mini avery, with upto about 6 birds. Would love to hear any suggestions people may have about colours I should start with. Some of the birds I've seen from peoples posts are amazing. Blue/Yellow birds seem to be my fav but after visiting a local breeders place I could easily go crazy. Should I try and stick to limited colour range if I intend to breed or should I just mix it up? Also, how much should I pay? Thinking of purchasing from a few different breeders to mix it up a bit. Is it possible to have half a dozen birds that are as friendly and easy to handle as Bender? should I keep him separate?

Love to hear any your suggestions.

Welcome to the forum. Your bird sounds like a recessive pied. It is really great that you have read the FAQs before starting. Six birds will be happy together but it would be better if they were paired separately when you are ready to breed them. Just buy the colours you like but if you are planning to breed try to get unrelated birds

Hi Landau :) and :D to the forum you will find very imformative here, Neville gave you some great advice :D

I agree with Neville. Just from your description your bird sounds like a recessive pied. Six birds seems to be the magic number if you are starting out with a breeding program. It can be a bit of a colour explosion visiting a breeder and you almost inevitably make an impulse purchase or two initially before getting an eye for what you want. Definately try to get unrelated birds, and I would probably start with something simple like yellowface sky blues, and then introduce other varieties you really like. I keep it to 1-3 varieties in my aviary - normals, opalines and yellowfaces.

Welcome and good luck :) Hope to hear from you more.

Thanks for tips guys, very much appreciated.

I've managed to pick up the details of one breeder, his yard and avery are clean and the birds look healthy so I might get a few from him...just need to find another breeder to get the rest from.

The opalines are spectacular. "Budgie Bob" as i've dubbed him, has some beautiful "blue and green ones" that I'd like to pick up but he also has what i'm calling a fellow face blue(but might be a fellow face cobalt from what i've seen from pics on here) as well as a yellow faced grey and yellow with flecks of blue....I should write a list of the birds I want to get!

I'm enjoying checking out peoples picture on their profiles at the moment, there are some awsome colours.

OH THE WONDERS OF BUDGIE COLOURATIONS AND GENETICS :) i cant wait to hear of your future jouney into the world of budgies :D have fun and dont be afraid to ask any questions even when you think they sound stupid xx Elise xx

Hey and welcome! You asked the Question if you should keep Bender seperate. If you want Him to be tame the Yes you should keep him seperate.

Good luck and have fun chooseing!

Hey, I'm new too. Welcome to the forum. If I were you if you are going to breed I'd get the birds off different breeders.
