Posted September 21, 200915 yr I have a hen sitting on 7 eggs and she is not leaving the nestbox, the male is going in and feeding her but i have noticed she is losing weight. i have put a millet spray and some vegies in the nestbox but is there anything else i can do for her.
September 21, 200915 yr Losing weight is not a good sign for a hen about to raise babies. Check to see if she is poopy or if the nest smells funny indicating an issue. Put half a cup of seed in the nestbox ( loose...pour it in ) and see if it helps.
September 21, 200915 yr Author I have checked her and she has no pooey bottom and the nestbox smells fine. I did noticed that she has a couple of pin feathers on her head so she is starting to moult which is not good.
September 21, 200915 yr Add some seed, like Kaz said, to give her some extra food, maybe some millet as well as it has a higher fat content for her. Make sure you keep her calcivet up in her water, she would need it. Hens will lose some weight in breeding as they look after the young, not themselves, but this is more likely to occur when she has chicks to feed, not eggs to sit on. Keep a close eye on her, you might need to foster the eggs and remove her if it becomes life threatening.
September 22, 200915 yr I agree with Dave. She will need close monitoring and may need to have her eggs fostered and she may need to retire from breeding for this season till she is well again. Watch her and guage the situation.
September 22, 200915 yr Author Thanks Kaz and Dave, I will keep a close eye on her. She ate the millet spray i put in her nestbox so i put more in. This is her first time for breeding so maybe she is not aware that she is supposing to be leaving the eggs to go and eat and not just sit on them.
September 22, 200915 yr If you can add hulled oats as well, they are high is carbs - fat food for budgies!
September 22, 200915 yr Yes and maybe give the male plenty of extra treats too so he gives her lots of calories? I hope she is okay.
