Posted September 14, 200915 yr Our budgie got her toe caught in the bars of the cage and lost her toe in the process. She's perched on one foot and the blood had stopped but she's either knocked it or pecked it and it's dripping again. What's the best way to stem the flow of blood? Can she perch on one leg overnight or should I put something on the cage floor for her to sit in? Appreciate your advice here. Thanks Sandie
September 14, 200915 yr Any kind of flour can stench blood flow, and it often forms a cake that can cement over the wound which is easily removable after it has hardened (after a day or two to stabilise the wound if the flour is still on it can be removed). Apparently white pepper works best. Dont be afraid to have someone gently wrap her in a towel, gently extend and bandage her foot if you can. If you dont think you can do it safely, just use the flour or pepper.
September 14, 200915 yr Author Thanks Dean! I checked on her a moment ago and she's now got the foot on the perch and it appears to have stopped by itself. I'll keep checking though and will certainly use your remedy if it appears to be flowing again. I think she started it off again when she came over to 'tell me all about it' - I've since covered her cage to keep her warm and quiet. While waiting I've had time to read some other postings, but you've come to my rescue for a second time and I'm grateful for that. Many thanks. Sandie
September 14, 200915 yr Dean is right - white pepper is best, but flour is a good alternative. I have had birds lose toes and they are fine. Make sure you work out how she got caught and fix that up so it cannot happen again.
September 14, 200915 yr Author Got hubby onto cage fixing - had to have a 'nice looking one' didn't I?! (It's big enough, and square enough, it just has it's wire bars going in directions other than up and down). A rethink might be in order. Thanks for your advice Dave. :emoticon112: Sandie
