Posted September 11, 200915 yr I have just been to the vets with a budgie that developed a lump and have been told it is a fatty tumour, this is my 3rd budgie in the last 10 months to develop a lipoma. I am wondering what is causing this to happen, my seed mix consists of french millet, canary seed, panicum, japanese millet, panorama millet and hulled oats. Is there something in my seed mix to be causing the problem? The 3 budgies were originally rescued budgies that were given to me so no idea of past history. I also went to a new vet today and because there was nothing he could do for the budgie he did not charge me at all which was pretty great. He said it is a usually a problem for fat budgies but none of the 3 have a weight problem.
September 11, 200915 yr I think it is just in the genetic makeup of some birds. I know one of the rescue budgies was Punky - the golden faced YF2 cobalt hen I gave you. She was always like that. Are the others related or from any you got from me? It is funny as I have never had that with Show Types, only with pet types

It is funny as I have never had that with Show Types, only with pet types Punky Brewster still has a lump but it is not growing bigger which is good. Ozzie was the budgie i took to the vets today and the other budgie is one i got given by a lady 3 months ago. The 3 are pet types so maybe it is just a genetic problem in pet types. Ozzie has become so placid that i would hate to lose him.
September 11, 200915 yr Ozzie never had a tumor when i had him, and as far as I know, you are not feeding him anything that would cause it to develop. Is it possible that some birds just naturally have a predisposition to it?

September 11, 200915 yr Aside from what Davehas told you, hulled oats is a fattening seed and best kept for an occasional treat. Show budgiues get it in their soaked seed when breeding though.
