Mum And Dad Treading On Baby

Featured Replies

Hi

My budgies have just had their first 'crop' of babies, (2). One came out of the nest box this morning and mum and dad seem to alternate between feeding it and treading on it. Is this something I should be worried about? If so, what can I do about it. They do not do it constantly and the baby seems okay.

Grateful for any advice

Artemis

Hello and welcome!

The baby should be okay as long as they are not doing it constantly. if you notice them start to be rough with it, there might be a hastle. remember: the budgie breeder's best tool is observation.

Good luck and welcome again

Its a dominance thing but can get out of hand. Some parents can attack the babies they see as being too needy if the parents are focussed on beginning another round of egglaying. Just watch. Are you colony breeding or cabinet breeding ?

Colony I spose. I am going to take the nest box away when the 2nd baby comes out. All appears to have settled down with the 1st one and the 2nd has been having a go at dad from the nestbox, so I think it will be okay. I have put a little house on the floor of the cage so they can get away if they want to.

Thanks for the advice.

Great job

Well Done Artemis! You're doing the right thing here by providing a 'safe' shelter.
