Posted September 9, 200915 yr Hey everyone I have enrolled in a course at Tafe doing Certificate 11 in Animal studies which could lead to vet nurse. I am really excited about it as I am going to specialize in birds. I have to do 120 hours work placement which is great because that is experience I start Feb 2010 and that feels like forever away.
September 9, 200915 yr Congratulations Splat. Do you have a possible placement yet with a vet ? I found that the hardest thing when I was a vet nurse........getting in the door at a vets.
September 9, 200915 yr Author No have to start looking and yep it sounds hard. But I would be happy in a pet shop too. But I am thinking of the RSPCA or how ever it's spelt
September 9, 200915 yr congratulations you clearly have a passion for it also use the waiting time to learn on your own some of the information taught in the course from reference material which would be available in a library, and fast track yourself to make it easier to get through the course
September 9, 200915 yr Author congratulations you clearly have a passion for italso use the waiting time to learn on your own some of the information taught in the course from reference material which would be available in a library, and fast track yourself to make it easier to get through the course  Thanks DrNat great advice will do that
September 9, 200915 yr That's exactly the sort of thing that I am trying to get into. But I haven't been able to find a course that isn't in Melbourne and that is too far away. As it is I am being forced to move to a town and hour and a half away from were I live now to do an Equine Study course next year. Â The course I've wanted to do since I was 13 is 5 hours away.. and I'll need 15 hours work placement just so they consider letting me enrol. Â Good luck wih it. Â And DrNat's advice is brilliant. I've been studying this sort of stuff most of my life and its made the short courses i've done in the past a whole lot easier.
September 9, 200915 yr Don't fall out with anyone, don't say anything[so to speak], just listen. Be careful when asking questions... A wise man can answer one question in the time a fool can ask TEN...
September 10, 200915 yr Author The only problem is I am getting old in the tooth and my memory is not as good as it use to so I am already freaking out, but I keep telling myself I can do it as I aready Have heaps of experience, plus animals love me for some reason.
September 10, 200915 yr you'll do just fine! Hey budgieloverkirsty, my best friend is doing the exact same course! Maybe you could get in touch with her?
September 10, 200915 yr Hopefully I'll be doing the course too! Thanks for letting me know where to find the info Splat. I really appreciate it. I'm planning to send my enrolment stuff in sometime next week.
September 11, 200915 yr woo hoo, you guys could start you own forum between yous!!!! just jokeing. it'll be nice having a group to consult with!
September 12, 200915 yr Hi Splat! I have done the Animal Studies at Tafe earlier this year. It was fanstastic, I'm sure you will love it! I am now into the Vet Nursing course, I admit its harder, but very interesting! You think you're old in the tooth, what about me? I'm going on for 49 years of age so if I can do it , I'm sure you can! I dropped out of High School at Year 10 and didnt know the meaning of the word "study"!! I have work placement at a small animals vet clinic in town where I live, so I was very lucky as some girls have to travel for an hour or more for their placement. I wished I'd have done this 20 years ago, I finally found my "niche"!!
September 12, 200915 yr sorry to sound stupid and all but if the shoe fits lol but um work placement what is that like do you need to have worked in the area before they will exept you or is it like work you did volnteary ??? to get into the course .
September 12, 200915 yr You dont sound stupid at all. To gain practical experience as part of the coarse we have to find a vet surgery in our area who will train us. We learn techniques such as cleaning surgical instruments, vaccinations, how to set up an anaesthetic machine for surgery, how to restrain an animal for the vet. It tons of fun!! All our time is voluntary but I dont mind. So we do one day a week at Tafe and then one day a week at the vets. The coarse goes for two years.
September 13, 200915 yr Author Sounds great Jenene I found a vet yesterday that takes placements, so tomorrow I am going to enquire but we do not have a vet here in this town so I need to travel :emoticon112: .
September 14, 200915 yr Reckon we need a sub forum for all the ones doing study into vets/nursing for birds etc. That way we can keep abreast of your progress. It would be great to follow your journeys through your studying. Great going guys!
September 14, 200915 yr Hey Everyone, I'm Planning on doing that same course next year, and then going on to become a veterinary nurse. Good luck to you both (Splat and Sunshine)
September 14, 200915 yr Author That's great news, looks like it is a poular course. :emoticon112: We can all keep in touch on how we are going, A on line study group cool need all the help I can get
September 15, 200915 yr I have THREE exams on Monday, they are for the Cardiovascular system, Admissions and Discharges and Anaesthetics, so I'm going to be all studied out by the end of the week. But its all worth it in the end!!
October 17, 200915 yr Author I have some promising news. Thursday I sent out letters to vets, wild park and 1 pet shop because this pet shop is the only one in our area that has all types of animals, anyway I asked for placement. Yesterday I got a phone call from the pet shop and I have a placement but I would like to do it at a vets too anyway a vet clinic rang me this morning and they had a job available so I have applied for that along with hundreds of others but the women from there that does the dog grooming rang me and told me to ring and apply for it as it would be great for my course, the job is receptionist. Any it is all looking good at least they are taking me seriously and not just throwing my letters away. Hopfully there will be more feedback and phone calls next week..
