Posted September 7, 200915 yr Hi there Our 2 budgies Lucy and Olly have been in the same cage now for around 6 months and think they both went through a molt and maturity both in the same cage and all was fine except for Olly who used to lick the bars But lately Lucy has turned nasty she attacks Olly when he isnt looking and if he goes by a food bowl she will go for him we have always made sure there are more than 1 food bowl in the cage and the same goes for the water bowl too Olly seems to much of a gent to have a go back at her it seems although he will protect himself though Any help or ideas please as I feel that lucy may hurt Olly
September 8, 200915 yr Females tend to be more bossier then males. You might need to separate them if she is hurting him. How big is your cage? If the cage is small, it is not spacious enough for them to have there own space. Do they have alot of toys in their cage? Do you change their toys and perches around regularly? September 8, 200915 yr Think about increasing their night time hours too... it's heading into spring and she may be becoming hormonal... and we all know how us females get! lol... increased dark hours can help this.
September 8, 200915 yr Author Hi there as we are in a household we have limited space nbut here is a picture of our setup Would prefer not to seperate them but if thats what we have to we have another cage to use The perches are moved around everytime we clean them out we never keep it the same
September 8, 200915 yr I believe your cage is way too small for two budgies... can you measure it for us? From that photo it looks tiny...
September 8, 200915 yr I would look into upgrading your cage is too small for 2 budgies, it really is too small for 1 budgie. They should be able to fly up and down and across and without hitting their wings, also it looks like you don't have much to keep them busy such as different toys, cuttlebones etc... Please do consider a larger cage, you can find good ones on e-bay, look for sales and if there is craiglist by you in your area.
September 9, 200915 yr I notice you have two perches. They look to be the same size. Budgies need different size perches to stretch their feet. You could put in some natural perches, rope perches. Here is a list of Safe wood that you could use for branches. Make sure that the branches are not sprayed or close to busy streets. Clean the branches bafore placing them in to the cage. I also noticed you placed the perches close together at the same level. It is a good idea to space them further apart and at different levels. Edited September 9, 200915 yr by birdluv
September 14, 200915 yr My birds love their swings (they like sleeping on them) and they like the bell on the bottom, I had one but had to get another one because they would fight about it, it took me a few months of searching for a good one. You should get some. They also like to be high up, so maybe put a tree twig; one end in the back of the cage and the other end on the side (if you know what I mean). This gives them another view. I have a male and female too. The male will try everything first. The female stands back. The female is bossy though, if I put in celery she normally tells the male off for a while, but then she gets over it and shares. I had a ladder in the bird cage, but took it out, my birds never used it. Its a waste of space.
