Posted April 20, 200520 yr Just this evening, my budgie has started sticking his tongue out a really long way. I think he may haave got some millet stuck at the back of his throat as he was fine a little while ago and had been eatin millet just before this started. Any ideas what I can do to help him????
April 20, 200520 yr how long have you had him for? what type of seeds do you feed? sometimes dust from the seeds can irritate the back of their throat. if you use a cheap brand maybe consider switching to a higher quality seed? some budgies are more sensitive to dust and husks than others. if he only does it after eating then i wouldnt worry to much about it, but if it is constant and appears random then i would advise you to see your avian vet about it.
April 20, 200520 yr Thanks Pixie. This is the first time he has ever done it so I think he might just have got some millet stuck. I just wondered if there was anything immediate I could do to ease the problem - but since he went back to eating the millet a minute ago I guess it can't be too bad!
April 20, 200520 yr yeah, sometimes when i give mine a millet spray from an open bag they do this afterwards - the dust must get to it more and i think millet sprays are worse for this than seed is anyway. maybe offer a lettuce leaf well washed in water as well as a millet spray? that way your budgie might like to stick his tongue out and lick the water droplets off mine love doing this!
April 20, 200520 yr Boil a kettle near him, not pointing at him, but so steam is easily wafted to him. treat this as croup in a baby, he needs moisture. if he wont drink, the steam will give him the moisture he needs, but DONT pint spout towards him.
