I went out to my aviary and checked up on my babies today and found that the hen and cock from the next nestbox have been attacking the babies resulting 4 out of 7 were dead.

I took out the remaining 3 babies and the mother that was feeding the chicks and put them in 1 of the breeding boxes that I am now setting up . I never put the cock in there as he also had blood on his face .

I have put flour on the wounds as per Dave 's instructions and the hen has been in the box with them so I will keep my fingers crossed that she does not reject them and they survive the shock of being attacked.

 

I have made the decision that from now on I am a caged breeder only , the stress is too much for me

So sorry for your losses Ross.....It must have been horrible for you...

Sorry to hear this Ross. A very common thing with colony breeding and very heartbreaking when it happens. A real eye opener too.

You may find the Dad is innocent and has blood on his face due to fighting the other adult budgies to protect the nest.

I would take the time if I was you to check the wounds on the babies. Often the head wounds get infected really quickly over 2-3 days and result in losses.

Better blood stopper and less messy is white pepper.

If you have some calcivet get a drop into the beaks of the affected including the Mum as it has glucose which will help the shock.

Warm lamp a definite necessity too due to shock.

I too had finally had enough with the issues of aviary breeding and converted to cabinets, i haven't looked back since

i have sadly lost another overnight and 1 of the 2 remaining doesn't look too good , but I will have to keep all fingers and toes crossed and see what happens . I have noticed that the hen has not been leaving the nest much so she has been eating the seed and millet that I put in the nest box .

I am glad you didnt lose them all and very happy your last chick is recovering. Even in breeder cages some parents can attack their own chicks.

Yep! Can be a real problem in breeding cabinets too when the parents get it into their heads that they do not want the babies around anymore for whatever reason.

Here is the remaining baby , pretty ugly at the moment but is looking better each day.

Photos on BBC are allowed to be 480 by 640 which is especially handy when our eyes get older and its harder to see anything from tiny tiny pictures

Un fortunatly the last remaining baby passed away today , I don't know if it was the heat in Sydney or it was somthing else as it seemed to be doing so well .

I have moved all of my eggs to breeding cages now so lets hope the parents don't neglect them .

you did the best you could Ross, and its so sad when they look like they have turned a corner and on the road to recovery and then they die just like that. Often after these attacks there is a deeper wound or a crack in the skull that develops an insidious infection we hadnt counted on......deeper injury we were unaware of...in these cases it kills them after we see evidence of superficial looking wounds healing.

Sorry to hear this buddy. The heat can be a strain on birds that are already struggling.
