Posted September 3, 200915 yr Hi all. I noticed yesterday morning that one of my hens was grounded. On having a look at her I noticed she had a wing feather, (not sure if it was a flight feather but must have been because she had trouble flying), coming through with the shaft around it. It would have been about 3 inches long with the feathers poking out the end. Anyway, I thought nothing of it, but when I checked her yesterday evening she was covered in blood! She was very weak and let me take her out of the aviary. I had to wash her so I could see where the end the feather was as she had bitten it til it was only a few millimeters long! I managed to get the bit out and the bleeding stopped straight away. I put her in the cage inside where it is warm and dark and she seems okay this morning, a bit puffed up but she is chirping and eating. Anyway, I was just wondering how long I should leave her inside and is there anything I can give her to make sure she recovers? Debbie
September 3, 200915 yr You did the right thing to keep her quiet and warm. i would leave her quiet and warm for another day or so, or until she gains her strength to act normally again. Birds are good at regulating their blood pressure after blood-loss. I hope she pulls through. Edited September 3, 200915 yr by **Liv**
