Posted August 25, 200915 yr Hi Everyone, an update on our first breeding attempt. picture 1. Our Aviary and flight from last post. picture. 2 After we divided aviary to separate breeders, from non- breeding. Non-breeder can access flight as well. picture 3. Some of chicks in 1st cage, 2 with splayed legs. All eggs now hatched. We have 4 cages.plus two box's on shelf. Cage 1. laid 8, hatched 8, lost no 3. 2 have splayed legs which we are trying to rectify. Cage 2. laid 9 hatched none? one egg rescued from seed dish placed in no. 5 (box on shelf.) Cage 3. no go. Pair back in Aviary to see if they re-bond with each other or new mate. Cage 4. laid 6 hatched 6(last to-day) Box 5. laid 8 of her own + 1 egg from no 2. So far should have 5 out has 1, I think maybe chick from 2 as can't find marked egg. Looks like her own are duds. Box 6. Was an Opaline who had 5 eggs but left them and went into moult? 1 was fertile with half formed chick rest empty. We are learning a lot as we go, can't get birds to try egg biscuit or soft foods. Having Corn, Celery, Silver beet,Gum leaves, grass seeds chick-weed. Have added vitamins to water for breeding pairs, plus cuttlefish, grit, iodine bell and now Calcium to water as well. Well, hope we end up with some new additions to aviary. Fingers crossed, hoping this is average results for newbie's.

Thanks everyone for your interest, yes 2 chicks have splayed legs. Have splinted them yesterday giving them extra calcium as well. Older chick is already sitting up a lot better, younger one keeps tipping forward a bit but is o.k. both are being fed so hopefully this will all help.

Robyn, if you are using the makeup sponge method, cut away a lot of the excess sponge so they can manouvre better and stabilise so they dont tip over. Check distance between holes in sponge and also make sure the legs and feet get proper circulation as it can be restricted some with sponge if holes are too small.

August 26, 200915 yr Author your going great! Thank's for that, have added a bit more shavings to box so they all have a more solid footing. Keeping everything crossed, wont use inserts again. Will keep up calcium as added help.

Robyn they now need something more solid under them, so may I suggest ( if you have any ) put an inch of natural claybased kitty litter in the box with the shavings on top.
August 27, 200915 yr out of curiosity, would sand do???? Babies in nestboxes pick and eat whats on the floor so I would not use sand.

Great Kaz, (still getting the hang of this computer stuff.) I have paper kitty litter its like hardish little pellets. Would that do until I can get some clay based litter?
August 27, 200915 yr It would depend if it was going to be toxic for the birds if the nibbled it?????????????????????? yeah?????
