Posted August 23, 200915 yr Okay I'm trying this again, hopefully better pics this time. They are in age order; the eldest two, are 5-1/2 weeks old today. Can you see Stewart's eyelashes? lol
August 23, 200915 yr I have no idea how to sex baby budgies so please dont take what i say as true wait for someone to reply who actually knows a thing or two unlike i haha but i'd be GUESSING they're all boys except Xena... either way they're very pretty
August 23, 200915 yr Author Thanks Liv as their personalities emerge your assessment makes sense. OT, I caught up on the thread about your featherdusters and I have to give you a pat on the back for stepping up to the plate, as we say over here, for those babies who were sent down the rough road. I come down on the side of, if we bring these creatures into our homes or feed them or expect them to perform for us, they become our responsibility, in sickness and in health, etc. etc. Adorable or not, they are in our hands. They were lucky to be born under your roof.

Can you see Stewart's eyelashes? lol So Simone goes back to Simon again! This time for sure. That's why I don't ever class myself as the budgie sexing expert....... there always seems to be one that I just am not 100% sure about. Same with one of my baby dilutes at the moment. One day I could swear she is going to be a she (well is...) and the next she looks decidedly like a he. Sigh. They sure are cute though Kate! Edited August 23, 200915 yr by nubbly5
August 24, 200915 yr Author Well we'll see! The mom is in her own cage now and dad is handling them all in the flight cage, so I'm watching to see who he's cozy with. You can see in Colbert's picture with dad that Horton positions himself between Xena and Colbert and shoos Colbert away (dolphin noises only, Horton's got a generally good temperment). Dad spoils his baby girl ROTTEN though, she still gets yummies every time she asks!! And poor Colbert, only 2 days older, was cut loose a week ago, lol.
August 24, 200915 yr To go from this - I would have ALMOST ALMOST bet that this was a hen...... (and others agreed with By The Way) Looking very much like a cock bird now. That's why some time ago I commented that advising on sexes of such young birds can be fraught with danger (of getting it wrong I mean). Just like the young hen I posted for example in your previous topic. Still time tells all with budgies and it's great that you perservered with the babies and us to find out for sure. Again, great photo's too. What camera do you use?
August 24, 200915 yr Author Thanks nubbly5, I know--- I couldn't figure Simon out as he was so easy-going with his siblings (male?), and yet (before the separation) mom was singling him out and chasing him from any perch down to the cage floor (female?). The camera is just a Canon G6, a few years old now, but I set it to "macro" and also "burst" (when you depress the button and it shoots continuously) ... so I can get 5 or 6 shots in a row. For a few of the birds I can kind of see the nostrils breathing in successive shots! And you can see their irises checking you out up and down as your shooting, etc., pretty cool. It just raises your odds of getting at least ONE shot in better focus, right?
