Posted August 23, 200915 yr Just wondering, at what age can you breed budgies? I caught them err.. having at it today and i've been thinking about breeding them but still think its too early. The youngest of the pair I got early december, but not really sure how old she was when I got her.
August 23, 200915 yr Author Also, even if they're too young, just out of curiosity with regards to their genetics, what type of babies would they produce. Female is a light blue cinnamon... and the male is cobalt spangle
August 23, 200915 yr Although budgies will breed when they are quite young it is not advisable to let them breed until they are at least 12 months old. Young budgies will often engage in "recreational sexual activity" When your pair are old enough to breed, if your cock bird is not split for cinnamon you could expect about: 25% cobalt 25% sky blue 25% spangle cobalt 25% spangle sky blue All the males will be split for cinnamon If the cock bird is split for cinnamon about half would be cinnamon as well
August 23, 200915 yr Author okay :budgiedance: So if I wait til around December/jan i should be right? I have 3 birds in my indoor avery at the moment, so I've decided to get a friend for my newest bird Dunkin while the other two are off breeding. I might go pick one out today, quarantine it for a month, let everyone settle down until December/jan and then breed the other two. Thanks everyone :budgiedance: Can always rely on you guys on this forum for sound advice
August 23, 200915 yr Try and remember that seeing budgies bonking in the aviary does not mean they need a nesting box or need to be bred. Budgies have budgie sex at a very young age and budgie sex is NOT a sign they need to be bred. Correct age for successful breeding is 12 months onwards. Earlier than that can be hazardous to both budgie parents and chicks and present you with more problems than you would want to take on board. Prior advice re breeding age of 8-9 months in this topic I would not endorse. A good topic to read................... http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....showtopic=22068 Edited August 23, 200915 yr by KAZ
August 23, 200915 yr Author Thanks for the advice :budgiedance: Will definitely hold off on the breeding then.. they can just .. err.. enjoy eachothers company for a couple more months without the "commitment" :budgiedance:
August 23, 200915 yr Meanwhile, take a look around the aviary and be sure there will be nothing they see as a possible place to raise a family.
August 23, 200915 yr Author Theres not.. they have swings, perches, some ladders, rings their food and water containers and a bowl at the bottom of the cage with fresh fruit and veg.
