Posted August 20, 200915 yr Hello everyone I have a budgie cage and I need help setting it up. Is this too small for one budgie? My friend thinks it is but i think its an okay size... Of course i will let the bird out once its been tamed. WHen should I clip the wings? I might get my boyfriend to do that first because im not game enough to clip the wings (dont really like that idea tho) and sorry if im in the wrong forum for this. Oh heres a picture of my cage. http://i31.tinypic.com/2dse9a9.jpg Edit: Im getting my dad to cut the perch to the right size. P.S the bottom of the cage is wired should i put some grit paper or newspaper for the budgie to walk on????? Thanks heaps everyone for your help and advice! August 20, 200915 yr You didnt say the size, but that cage looks like a breeder cage size........maybe 2 ft wide ? It looks fine for one budgie. You will want to have your perches running from front to back and set each side of the cage so he can fly across the cage. Paper in the bottom is good and you can change that regularly. GRIT paper is NOT a good idea. Edited August 20, 200915 yr by KAZ
August 20, 200915 yr Great looking cage. Ideal for one to two budgies  I agree about the perches going from front to back. Gritt paper is a waste of money as its bad for them. Newspaper is ideal and its up to you if you want to put it in the trey or on the wire. i personally put it on the wire

August 20, 200915 yr That's a nice cage. Maybe you could have a natural branch perch as well as dowel, it's good for the budgie's feet to have variety. I've never had a clipped bird so I don't know about that, but there's a pinned post about it in this section.

August 20, 200915 yr Your bird will **LOVE** that bell toy. I put paper on the bottom of my boy's cage (above the wire) and it makes it so quick and easy to clean in the morning...just whip the paper out and put a new one in. I think the set up with cages you are supposed to put the paper underneath the wire so the bird doesn't stand in its poo but I've found my boy doesn't generally stand in it...and he freaks if it is just the wire in the bottom of the cage (for young birds it can be hard to balance and their foot can fall in between the wire)

August 20, 200915 yr You want your new budgie to be between 6-8 weeks old to be ideal for taming. 6 months old and it will be quite wild and a challenge to tame.
