Well And Truly Plucked

A pair of grey greens I had down breeding surprised me with producing a blue chick. There was only two chicks, a green and a blue in that nest. They also had a foster chick a green opaline ( a grand child of Omelette's ).

Checked them last night to find the mother with blood on her face and all three chicks well and truly plucked........head shoulders and back.......and two of them bleeding from the back of the neck. I immediately fostered them to another nestbox where two foster parents got in and warmed them for the night.

Chicks are well today. Last night they were screaming anytime either I or foster parents went near them but today they have calmed down.

Fingers crossed :o

But on the flip side, you won't be making that mistake again! :o

I wonder why they do this...they sit on the egg for weeks, feed and look after the chicks, then all of a sudden they do this.... :D

Poor little darlings...

Babies are doing very well in the care of foster parents and foster siblings. New feathers are growing to cover the bald spots.

feathers always grow back with in weeks of a plucked chick thats how you can tell plucked from french moult

if someone trys to sell a bird that can not fly and is bald no feather growth starting and they say it was plucked in nest but will be fine they are full of it

your bubys will look no diffrent to the others by time they out

i had one case once worse than yours and all grew back before they flegde and they only had few weeks left in box mother just wanted to lay again

mine were bald i thought they were french molt at start no blood and fine in morn bald at night top to toe but bar few spots but were plucked it happens so quickly

do you think they will grow back properly or will it forever be visible?

Well so far it looks like it will grow back fully.

If the feather follicles have been damaged then they dont always grow back fully over the top of the wings.

Another plucking disaster !!! Different hen different nest...between last night and this morning the hen savagely plucked all five babies. Would have called her a perfect hen before this as she was so good !! But not now.
