Hi all..

 

I checked yesterday, and the pair I have together had 2 eggs, checking them this morning there was a egg on the floor of the cage with a small crack, can I put it back in? can I try some clear nail polish?

Or should I just dispose of it?

It was cold, so it had been out for a while I think....

Sealing a cracked egg has to be done straight away. Liquid paper is best. If its been dropped like from nestbox or perch chances are its addled. Addled eggs wont hatch. If it has leaked through the crack same thing. An egg thats cracked in a nest and one that will leak with jeoardise the other eggs as they can get stuck to each other or the mothers chest.

Thank you Kaz, I think I will now dispose of it, don't know how long it was out/cracked, I don't want to jepardise the other two

I agree with Kaz but I have put eggs in the nest from the floor and they have hatched but they were not damaged.

Small dents can be repaired by nail polish (or as Kaz says liquid paper but I've not tried that). So long as it's only a small dent and not a crack right through the membrane inside the shell the egg should be fine - SO LONG AS it was not far along the growing phase and has been chilled to the point of killing the embryo. If a newish egg is thrown out it still has a good chance of hatching even if it has been chilled for quite a while but if an almost finished (don't know how else to say this) egg is thrown out and chills for too long the chick inside will die anyway.
