September 18, 200915 yr Author Well Cricket is a fiesty little thing, she is not quite 3 weeks old and trying to poke her head out of the nesting box.....Do you guys put the box on the floor of the cage? Just worried she soon might fall out!...?? Hi All... Does anyone put the breeding box at the bottom of the cage when the chicks get older? I don't want her to fall out......
September 18, 200915 yr I have paper on the bottom of my cage. I leave the box where it is, so as not to upset the parents. If she jumps out, put her back. She is too young to be out at this stage. When she is a little older, cut a curve in one side of a 2litre ice cream container, put some nesting material in it, and put it on the cage floor. She has a safehouse, plus dad should still come down and feed her.

September 24, 200915 yr Author Hi everyone, Well Cricket is 4 weeks old tomorrow, she is still in the nesting box. I am a bit concerned because mum is trying to break out of the cage and dad is trying to mate again...... Should I just leave everything as it is? should I remove mum and keep an eye on dad to make sure he feeds her? Thanks in advance. Anne
September 24, 200915 yr Author I had a feeling mum was not in the nest enough....and I've never seen dad in there.....I checked baby yesterday morning but did not pick her up....I went out to do water and seed and mum and dad had been fighting.....bit of blood.....I got cricket out of the box and she is quite thin and not warm, I don't think she is getting fed, she hasn't been attacked I just think she has been abandoned... I "bit the bullet" and put mum and dad into the avairy, cricket is inside with a lamp and seed and millet on the floor, I have a upturned ice cream container with bedding, I have some Vetafarm NEOCARE hand rearing formula, which I mixed with hot tap water, she wasn't very interested even though her crop seems empty, I will try again every hour.... I hope I have done the right thing.....
September 24, 200915 yr Do you want them to breed again? If not, remove Mum. If you want them to breed again, get a 2 litre ice cream container and place it, with some nesting material in it, on the floor of the cage. Put the little one in there. Dad will continue to feed it and Mum will have the nestbox - everyone's a winner.
September 25, 200915 yr If Cricket is 4 weeks old she should be fully feathered by now. Did you put seed in the nestbox as per my topic about adding seed ? If so she would be eating by now. Best move would have been as Dave suggested a tub on the cage floor ( seed for bedding ) and see if dad feeds her. I would remove the mother out of sight and hearing. September 25, 200915 yr Author Thanks Dave and Kaz, Yes...seed and millet have been in the nesting box. Cricket is eating seed and egg and biscuit on her own, she even tried a bit of spinach and carrot.... I had to clean up dad he had a small gash on his wing but is fine now, the bleeding stopped with white pepper.....I took mum to the vet yesterday afternoon as she had a cut near her eye that I wasn't confident in treating, it turns out that it wasn't as bad as it looked, he cleaned her up and all seems okay for now.... I have cricket and dad in a cage inside and I have mum in the hospital cage in my sons room, so they can't hear each other, so for now it's all working fine...

October 8, 200915 yr Author Well things are not going too well...... :ohmygod: Mum healed nicely, but dad did not feed Cricket and he attacked her......I removed him straight away and put him in the avairy..... Cricket has been in a cage inside with a heat lamp since Sunday, I was concerned that she wasn't really eating the seed as I could not find any husks. I changed her seed to a finch/canary mix and crumbled up millett spray, water, dry egg and biscuit, wet egg and biscuit, and with the advice of DrNat, I have been trying to get her to eat some wet egg and biscuit using the flat end of a toothpick, without much luck, she is very weak and is still not perching as dad has hurt her leg. I couldn't take it any longer just watching her so I took her to the vet this afternoon, it wasn't an avain vet just a normal vet....she said she holds little hope for her, that there is a bird hospital around here somewhere but the stress of taking and leaving her there might be to much. She weighed her...she weighs 25g, gave her an injection of ADEC, a vitamin, she said her leg is not broken just sprained....some "Wombaroo Granivore rearing mix", that I am supposed to feed her...I have been trying every half an hour with little success, I am so scared I will get it in her lungs... I feel so sad, I feel as if I have just done everything wrong....I don't know what else to do.... Maybe mum and dad rejected her for a reason and I need to take her to be put to sleep.....
