I have found times, too, through the year that the birds breed better. So why waste time and effort breeding birds in off times? I believe in very selective breeding for quality and not for quantity. Why try to breed hundreds just for that one that will do well in the nationals?

I aim to be able to do that ..... but up until this year I haven't had across the board consistency with the progeny. My 1st year I bred 75 chicks but only kept 5 and last year I bred over a hundred and there were about 40 I thought were okay. As I meld the bloodlines I hope to be able to breed exactly what I want and thus cut down on numbers. Also I do 'dummy runs' with my best maiden hens so that the second round is a garenteed ripper.

From 17 Cages, I breed average 135 chicks a year. (over 150 last year) I pair up just after the nationals (June) and the last pair goes down by the 1 week in November. They get 2 rounds of chicks or two clear rounds and your out.. eg 1st round clear , 2nd round chicks, 3rd round clear.... out. So by end of February it all done.
