Posted August 11, 200915 yr I wanted to put two of my budgies together in the same cage. I bought a large cage big enough for two budgies to fly with plenty of space and I originally wanted to put the two brothers together but they hate each other. I really want two budgies together in this cage. I don't like him on his own. So any way to the point, can I put a 3 month old male with his 10 month old sister? Without mating? August 11, 200915 yr As a general rule, you can just put them together whenever as long as you don't have a nest on the side of the cage, most budgies will live happily together without mating. If they decide to mate and just lay on the floor of the cage, then you can just remove the eggs and you wont have babies! Good luck!
August 11, 200915 yr As said that is the rule of thumb but many budgies don't follow that rule so if you don't want them to mate then I would not have them together.
August 11, 200915 yr Yes you can. you cant stop them mating, but just dont let them nest and all is fine
August 12, 200915 yr Theres a big difference between MATING and BREEDING. Mating is budgies recreational sex, and budgies do have recreational sex all the time, just as they kiss and preen each other and feed each other. Mating does not automatically lead to breeding. Your two are related by differing clutches and they dont know they are related. At some point in the future you may see them mating, but as long as there is no nestbox, no large food dishes that can be seen as a nest, or no newspaper to shred up on the bottom of the cage then mating behaviour may not lead to breeding and egglaying. BUT since you have a new large cage, I would put the two boys together in there and give them a chance to get along with the much larger space and more toys, ladders etc.
August 12, 200915 yr It doesn't matter if they KNOW they are related either - the constraints put on humans by culture and tradition do not exist for budgies. Brother, sister, mother, father whatever - all is fair game in budgie land. Female budgies, if they really want to breed, will nest virutally anywhere even on the floor of the cage - maybe not very succesfully but some will still try. You can still just take away the eggs a she lays or she may not even try but she still might. Some hens even without males present will try and lay eggs and nest anyway. But personally I would go with the 2 brothers or 2 other unrelated males. Male budgies are generally nicer and seem to bond more easily to people anyway.

I agree, Pretty and Merlin were awesome together
August 12, 200915 yr Author If I slowly introduce the two brother who would I go by doing it. Or could I put an Uncle and nephew together. They are related by the father. But I also have worries about putting him in with the 3 month old because he is soo well....lets just say he mates with any thing that moves including me and even male budgie's. If anyone has any pointers pleasse say.
August 12, 200915 yr Author if they are brothers aren't they still together? Non of my budgie's are together at the moment
August 12, 200915 yr they are all in seperate cages? Why? To reintroduce them which I can't image it has been that long since they are only 3 months you can put the cages side by side and let them out together if you let your birds out and they will get reintroduced.
August 12, 200915 yr Author the brothers are from two serperate clutches one is ten months and the other is 3 months. I have two hens sharing a 3 foot cage. The mother and Father of the chicks are seperated to rest Then Oushi one of the brothers does'nt really liek other budgies but I de like him too. Bailey the uncle has always been on his own since his hen died and Ollie the budgie I want to pair with his brother or uncle Edited August 12, 200915 yr by Jodie
August 12, 200915 yr Ah...well you should be able to put the 2 brothers' cages side by side and let them interact this way, if you find they are doing okay, let them out together, the older one may get bossy and try to step on the back of the younger one, sometimes I think that is more dominance then a mating ritual, it happened with Pretty and Merlin in the beginning because they were the same age apart as your 2 boys within a week everything settled down and I was able to keep them in the same cage during the day and then at night. In the FAQ there is an article about how to introduce 2 new budgies together you might want to read too.
