Posted August 8, 200915 yr Hi, My girl skipper has half ripped her nail off...... I called the animal hospital and they won't see her til 4.30pm on Monday, as thats a public holiday here for Ekka show day there is a surcharge $101.50 for the consult....goodness me...I will pay the fee thats not the issue but I don't want to wait til Monday.....can I help my poor girl?? I have removed her from the aviary to a cage by herself. Should I bath it in salty water? can I use Betedine? Should I pull it off? I'm beside myself.....
August 8, 200915 yr i personally would'nt bother with an animal hospital for this pull her nail off in one swift movement. This may hurt her a little bit, but not half as much as her catching it. Dip the toe in a bit of corn flour to stop the bleeding and let her go the toe will form a scab and she'll be right as rain within a few weeks.
August 8, 200915 yr Author Thank you Libby.......I am going to do this now.... Cornflour??? okay.... going to trust you on that one!!! Thank you so so much.. Anne
August 8, 200915 yr Agree with above, make sure it's swift and you hold both the nail and toe firmly so you don't make any more damage than is necessary. After you put the powder on, grab a tissue and press firmly, holding the edges of the wound together for about two minutes without moving the tissue to check if it's bleeding (you'll dislodge the clot if it does). After two minutes you can have a look, repeat the holding for two minutes if it's still bleeding. Good luck! Her toenail probably won't grow back but she has three others on the foot to help her get around. Edited August 8, 200915 yr by Chrysocome
August 8, 200915 yr I agree with this too. the nail should grow back.. sometimes they will grow back a little deformed, but overall fine.
August 8, 200915 yr Author All done and all good..... My girl was so brave..... (not to mention me and hubby!!) Thank you all so much for your advice. Hubby held her and I got a good grip of her leg and toe with one hand and the nail in the other... in 1 fast pull it was gone...I used the cornflour after it was pulled, I thought it would bleed a lot more, but only a few drops, now I can see whats going on more I think she may have just broke the nail close to the toe as there seems to be a bit of nail left...? Chrysocome:..I put pressure on the toe for 2 minutes and there was no more bleeding, thanks so much. Thanks to all, I feel so much better now, and I'm sure if Skipper could talk she would thank you too..... Picture of the end result. I will keep her inside for the night in the hospital cage and keep a close eye on her. Edited August 8, 200915 yr by anne101
August 8, 200915 yr Great the fact of having a bit of toe nail left looks good for her to re-gain her nail Well done to hubby, you and your brave birdy
August 8, 200915 yr Great work. I have many budgies with toes like that... (the down side of colony breeding). They all get around fine.
