Some Pretty General Questions.

Hey all,

I recently bought a male and female pair of budgies along with a breeding cabinet and I am interested in breeding, I have a few questions and any help would be appreciated in answering them

1) I live on the Central coast of NSW, I am wondering if it is possible to keep my cabinet outside if it is on a covered patio? I have seen a few people around my area which keep budgies in aviaries all year round.

What would be the pro's and con's of doing this? Would it be too cold to do so of a night?

2) I bought some "budgie seed" from the shop I bought the birds from, What other foods are good to give on a staple basis?

3) I have read that I should worm my birds every 4 months, What is the best brand to use?

Thanks!

1) Yes, that is fine. The weather on the Central Coast is pretty mild, so you should be fine. Ensure that where you place them is dry, out of the wind and draughts, and gets sunlight at some point during the day, preferably the morning.

2) There are many different types and qualities of budgie seed so hopefully you have a good one. Some less than honest people sell rubbish. I regualrly give my birds spinach, corn, brocolli, carrot and sometimes beetroot.

3) I am not sure on the best brand.

vetafarm wormout gel water soluble bird wormer is easy to use for small amounts of birds burnie nationals had a stall selling it on the day seemed to be very popular 2mls to 160 mls drinking water 100ml bottle for 3 birds would last a while

To be considered if keeping birds in breeder cages on a patio.............

1. ESCAPES.....make sure door to breeder cage and to nestbox cannot be lifted. Birds will break out and others will break in.

2. PREDATORS.............rats, cats, and birds ( such as hawks, crows and magpies )................all these creatures can get at the birds. Bird neeting the patio may have to become an option. Poison rodent traps will have to be put out. Neighbours cats will be attracted and hunt at night.

3. VERMIN.............mice and rats will be attracted to them. If Mice go through the cages there will be illness and death to the birds by contaminated food and water. Mice are very capapble of running verticall up brick walls and jumping onto the cages.

Thanks for all the replies!

I actually wanted to keep them in my garage but I wasn't sure if they would breed in there due to artificial light, Will an energy saving globe which is on the ceiling of the roof be enough to imitate light requirements?

Thanks

If lighting is dull or insignificant then it will affect the urge to breed. Also, to be considered is what chemicals or such are in the garage that may prove harmful if vapours escape.....and no cars to be driven in and out because of exhaust emissions.

Again you still have to prevent rodents.
