What Is This Budgie?

Featured Replies

Hi, I just bought this new budgie. I'm pretty sure he's skyblue cinnamon.

I've never seen a cinnamon with the mixture of light and dark markings like he has, so would this pretty much be a normal thing? If so, why are the markings like that and what does it mean?

And is he a he? The photos were taken without flash and they show white rings around the nostril but there is a definite blue tinge to his cere.

I'm not too sure about his age though, possibly 3-6 months as his iris rings are visible.

Thanks :(

He's sky blue & Opaline, I know that much, Not sure on the wing markings though

im not good at varietys but ill have a stab i think its a girl and a skyblue opaline cinnamon wing but i havent seen markings on her wings as large as they seem to look before on a bird almost like a spangles wings arnt they so could be a skyblue opaline cinnamonwing spangle but i dont know what half mine are so only guessing

Sky Blue Opaline Cinnamon Wing - definitely not a spangle.

The body colour is diluted because of the cinnamon wing and the opaline has had an effect on the wing colour. When hens are out of condition, they often have blue tinges on their cere.

:o yes you people have enabled me to get better with varietys that was my first thought in my post and its a hen :( oh i am proud of myself thank you to everyone that helps me with varietys im picking it up slowly

opaline also dilutes body colour.

cere colour is unusual though - more like a fallow cock. Not saying it is a fallow mind you, just that the cere doesn't scream hen to me.

AND you will often get differently coloured feathers in a young bird that is going through it's first moult. I guess that when this bird is fully moulted it's markings will all be the same cinnamon colour (colours tend to brighten and darken as birds moult into their adult plumage).

or it could be due to genetic cross over in the genetics thats way out of my league though sorry but yes cinnamon opaline sky regardless of that fact

I have seen a light green bird with this exact look. It was an opaline cinnamon - that much was clear, but the wing markings were dark in some patches as well just like this bird. At the time i was considering buying it because it was so unusual, part i didnt i just kept going back every week to see if it was still there and look at it further. After a bit of reading i think i narrowed it down to the fact that opaline changes the melanin distribution, so it alters the colouration of the cinnamon giving you some black and some brown instead of all brown feathers.

opaline also dilutes body colour.

fallow cocks have pink ceres? unless they're very old and out of their prime???

I 90% sure it's a hen about 3-4 months old, just going through her first moult hence the marking colours changing...

She's gorgeous and a definate sky cinnamon opaline
