October 9, 200915 yr Author They are looking A-okay to me Renee I Know! Both of them are taking the weight of their bodies fine and there is no evidence of splayed legs at all! I am so glad I decided to do this journal and didn't give the cock bird away (almost did) or put him on a spit He is only a 06 bird so I have decided to keep him and put him to a good Green or Olive hen next year .... I won't put him to another Lute hen though. Edited October 9, 200915 yr by renee

October 11, 200915 yr Renee.............when you were using that other calcium source before ( not the calcivet ) was that when you had the issues with the deformed legs or not ? Just wondering.
October 11, 200915 yr Author Renee.............when you were using that other calcium source before ( not the calcivet ) was that when you had the issues with the deformed legs or not ? Just wondering. I have always used some form of calcium supplement for my breeding pairs on a regular basis. Last year I trialled another source of Liquid calcium other than Calcivet at the time of the first deformed chicks (the ones you helped euthanise), it was something I picked up from the pet store, I think it was called Liquid Calcium Supplement. At the beginning of this breeding season when I had my second batch of deformed chicks I was using Calcivet in the water. For the past couple of months I have been using Calcivite Plus from the Knox Bird Vetinary Clinic which is a Calcuim, Vit D3 and Magnesium supplement. I put it into the soft food every day and into the water a couple of days out of 10. Personally I don't think the calcium has any bearing really .... Remember the chicks you saw, they had huge bodies and thin, twisted little red legs .... not normal splayed legs at all. Maybe their legs had broken but I was more inclined to believe it was because they couldn't support the weight of their bodies. Early on when they were about 7 days old I thought they were going to be the best Lutes I had ever bred ..... but then their legs just didn't develop. Yes, in hindsight I should have taken photos - I hope never to see it again, though. Edited October 11, 200915 yr by renee
October 11, 200915 yr Gotcha I was wondering if the other liquid calcium supplement that you trialled was the one in use, but it seems it happened over calcivet use too. I recall the chicks,,,,the leg bones had complete seperation between "knees" and hips and a great deal of redness and inflamation reminiscent of severe arthritic inflammation. I have had two in nests over some years the same and I euthenased them also. I, too, wish we had taken a photo and documented the chicks.

Between this year and last I have bred over 200 chicks and the only cases I have had have involved this particular cock bird and his 2 different Lute hens .... I don't think it is a lack of calcium, it is certainly not nest box related as I have used a different nest box every time and I always put fussy cat litter in the nest box .... I am certainly NOT going to put him to one of his previous Lute hens and see if it repeats itself .... non-Lute hens from now on
October 12, 200915 yr They are looking good Renee, I have a 3 week baby that was doing good and yesterday I noticed it had a leg problem, seems to ne laying on its belly with one leg behind and when I picked her up that leg just stayed there like she can't move it weird.
