Posted August 2, 200915 yr Hi All I am only new here and I have no dout that this topic has probably been discussed before but I could not find it . I have 20 birds in my aviary that are just starting to lay , I cleaned out the cage yesterday and have noticed runny droppings on the floor this morning , I will try to take a photo and show what it looks like . Is this because of stress due to changing their feed 2 weeks ago the seed I got was called avi grain budgie mix , I don't like it as there seems to be more on the ground than before and doesn't appear to have as much seed variety as seed like trill . Is the change in seed causing the problem of not I gave them some carrot the other day , maybe its that . Thanks in advance for the great advice that I know I will get from this great site . Ross
August 3, 200915 yr It could be the diet change. Some seed that hasn't been stored properly can have mould and bacteria contamination which make the birds sick. Also wet aviary floors make birds very sick. Does the poo smell rancid? They could have, what we call, egg poo. These are large droppings that are of normal consistency and smell that come 2 days before an egg is laid. photos would help
August 3, 200915 yr Author This is how the dropping look , are these normal or do I have a problem. Thanks Ross
August 3, 200915 yr They are a little wet and light in colour. however you say your hens are laying eggs. The laying of eggs can cause droppings such as these. There are some lovely normal looking droppings there too so, i would suspect that these droppings are only coming from one bird. It would be more wide spread if it were food contamination. keep a close eye out for any birds showing illness or stress. Food around the beak, staining in the feathers above the cere, droppings sticking to feathers around the vent, fluffed or sleepy appearance etc. Any of these are signs that something is wrong.
