Posted August 1, 200915 yr just wondering how old would be ""to old"" to use a hen for breeding , has a blue club ring '03 and its condition seems okay
August 1, 200915 yr She's still okay to breed, as long as she's cabinet breeding... that way it's no stress on the old girl from other hens and such do you have a suitable male for her? Any older then 02 is usually too old.... But their's alot of people who have had budgie's up to 10 years old raising healthy clutches.... those were cocks though, not hens with hen's its a different story cause it's alot more hard work. August 1, 200915 yr I disagree. Its hugely risky to use a hen past the age of four years........... incidence of eggbinding and prolapse would be extremely high.
August 1, 200915 yr I breed females up to 5 years of age. providing they are healthy Edited August 1, 200915 yr by Pearce
August 1, 200915 yr I wouldn't breed with her either... too old in my books. Can you post a photo of her?? A blue ring is 04, not 03. I would (and do, use) 04 cocks... but not hens.
August 1, 200915 yr If she is an exceptional hen and you are adding her to an existing line that you have bred from, then use her for line breeding (if exceptional) but if used for just breeding / or she is not exceptional - let her enjoy the fresh air and a chance to enjoy her middle life / old age away from the stress of breeding and a potential early death.
