Feather question

Featured Replies

ive got a question.....

i put together a showtype bird that was very...boffy... and a normal pet type. one of the chick seem to have this....boofiness a little bit, but i doesnt seem to have as heavy eyebrow and cap as its father....after the first moult, will this baby will be have more feathers? giving it a larger appearance?????

if i interpreted this right you upsized. which means you enlarged the line of the chcick and so it will appear bigger than an average pet type but smaller than a show. if im correct you wont get the same cap and ' boof ' as the father in only one generation as it is a mix of two sizes creating a medium. yee lol it dont make any sence what i wrote sorry darl but im hoping you get what im meaning. xx Elise xx

hhmmmm.thanks elise..it might be a mix of both, so might in the middle....ive got some pictures that i have used in other posts, but here they are:

This is the chick. she i a bit slim n this one but usually she is large and broad...she was interested in the camera.

i got this dad from a pet store, but its ring is from the south west budgie club. i am beginning to wonder whether it is a good idea to pair up this chick with her father when she is old enough so when i am doing this line breeding the progeny will have more of the fathers side. The father is a 2008 bird

any other thoughts on the chicks size to-be??

have you got picture of the mother father and sisters brothers

if you can show me these i will be able to tell you which will be the one to hold the fathers genetics more so

i breed like this all the time with my pet types although now they are all large lol

so but i have gotten usto seeing the passed on fetchers and knowing which chick will develop better its not always the biggest one either  you just need to learn to recognize the different quality's in the pairing and see what chick got how much of who

i cant explain but with pics could show u in detail what i mean

take picture of all and i will give it my best shot

usually chicks molt out better than what they are though

haha im replying again  i would say that you did upsize the chick as the body and plumage looks to be upsized slightly but as for the head it looks like a pet type head :) yes i agree with putting the chick to dad once he has grown up as then you may get the upsized head too :) good luck with it xx Elise xx

have you got picture of mum

seems she doesnt have dads head just mabe broadness across back

if i was you i would not be to quick in putting his potancy into her

i would pair him with you bigest headed hen see the out come first if thats what you want to do

she to me i would sell

but thats me

thats going on pet type birds also

i would not breed back to dad

she has a small head

my suggestion is to get another large show cull and breed her to that

then chicks from that breed the daughter to your cock pictured here

you should see more of the genetic make up this way and upsize heads also

i havent got very good pictures of the mother...shes just a random pet typ ebird i got from a eptshop

sorry its quite blurry.

this chick we are talking about is one of the babies, the other being the green pied you see in the pictures which is definetly a pet type. this pair is having a second batch of babies right now, at about 3 weeks the oldest.

we will see what happens after the chicks first moult...i am not sure whether i will be allowed to buy another showtype bird. i am selling a whole ton of birds and until i can afford a showtype expensive bird i will wait.i havent joined a club..yet.

i guess tommorow i will go out and take more pics.... i forgot to just show you this one....another one from a petshop one but he is the BIGGEST bird i have ever seen and is also from south west budgie club... he will be good for showtype stock except for the fact he is quite old...but moulting at the mo

any other comments , suggestions tonite before i take the pics of the pair babies and stuff???

I wouldnt breed father to daughter. By the time the baby is old enough you should have more choices.

when you say more choices....where do you think i will have more choices from...this piar? or from others that i might buy etc....

Breeding father to daughter is not a good plan.

i have decided that once i join a budgie club... then i will buy big birds :P

so, in summary, this chick will have a broad back, and be medium sized an i should sell it ....????

Assuming you said "Pairing chick with father" you mean inbreeding?

you didnt listen to me

i didnt say to go by an expensive bird

just a show size one

20 dollors at your local pet shop

well in my case anyhow

breed two different larger cocks

to two different pet type hens

then the chicks when older breed them together

keep all the large babys and sell the smaller ones

the small birds sometimes carry the larger genetics

and through bigger chicks

i dont sell any chicks i think i may want to breed with for at least 4 months pet type show mixed stock

as they can develop still longer if i have the room

dont just sell cause what we say follow your own judgment

but dont breed back to dad

do what i said this upsizes the birds over time
