Posted July 31, 200915 yr Hi everyone.... I have another pair that I would like to put in a breeding cage, the only room I have is in my avairy, as I have a shelf in there.... :hap: Has anyone ever done this? I have attached a picture..... Thank You.
July 31, 200915 yr Not a good idea. You may find they won't breed as they can see and hear all their 'friends' flying around and may spend more time trying to get out than make babies. It would also be quite distracting have other budgies climbing all over the breeding cage etc...
July 31, 200915 yr I found the opposite actually. I have a flight aviary with a sectioned off roost, and then the secure entrance where i come in. I had a shelf in the entrance that i converted to a breeding cage, it has one side that is directly connected to the roost by bird wire. The pair i had in that nest were very happy to themselves and the others often spend time watching them mating and hanging out on the wire. Sometimes the male in the breeding cage gets a bit defensive and screeches at them, but i found it very helpful for the most part because he had everyone watching, he displayed and showed off a lot more. I think either GB or shannon had their breeding cages stacked inside their flight and had no problems. Might pay to wait for them to comment :hap: I've had no problems with it - that pair laid 8 fertile eggs and so far 5 have hatched, 6th is due tomorrow. Edited July 31, 200915 yr by Dean_NZ

Jailbreak behaviour is worse as they feel trapped seeing all the others flying around, AND the aviary birds climb all over the cages. Hopeless scenario for breeding
July 31, 200915 yr well i really must disagree i have bred my birds in aviary for since i can remember i kind of alternate though to be honest but i find so long as the birds are really into each other then you dont get the jail brake effect happening my birds all became more active watching the morning and night and afternoon peep shows lol the most i found is everyone started coming into condition and i had not enough breeding cages lol you need to watch the hens though the ones in aviary they can try to get in to others to get box and can bit eachother through wire thats the only bad ,,i can see in it other than that...better as they can see all the birds, and they are colony breeders after all fix the cages so the birds can not get onto wire by using some clear perspex and drill holes in it so birds still can gain air and see each other just tie on with wire so they flip up for accsess i found it to be good results with always firtile eggs id try it ..all birds are different personally if i see jail breakers i return to aviary as i feel they are not ready and try them in a few weeks but thats me
July 31, 200915 yr I was told that the birds try to jailbreak and will concentrate on escaping instead of breeding. So i tried it. I tried 3 breeding cages, 6 birds. All 3 birds laid eggs in less than 14 days from being introduced, and 2 of the pairs had chicks. Other pairs eggs were infertile. This obviously isnt enough to prove for or against it, but its something to consider. I, for one, think it will work fine as I've done it before with no problems.
July 31, 200915 yr I've only ever had my breeding cages inside my aviaries. Did this years ago when I only had budgies and I bred hundreds of them. Budgies in the breeding cages, budgies flying around the aviary... Now I have princess parrots and finches in my aviary and budgie breeding cages inside the aviary. At first I was worried that the parrots would clamber all over the budgie cages so I installed fly wire screens over the front of the cages. I observed closely and noticed that the parrots weren't even interested so I removed the fly wire. Even with exposed wire front cages, the parrots don't go near the budgies. It's like they don't even exist in their eyes. I have one pair of budgies with 3 eggs at the moment and all the other pairs are going in and out of their nest boxes. From experience, I would say not a problem having cages inside your aviaries. In fact I think it stimulates them. The cock from the pair that has 3 eggs exhibits jail break behaviour but as soon as the hen is out of the box he tries to mate with her and constantly feeds her. Try it. You have nothing to lose...
July 31, 200915 yr Most of my breeding cages are inside the aviary and I've had no problems. The breeding cages are quite large so the birds don't feel trapped. If a hen is ready for breeding she is not interested in escaping and the cock bird should be interested in the hen
July 31, 200915 yr i think its fine to breed iin avairy the only problem i found is the other hens attacked the breeding couplebut this couple was not well bonded at all and i think it was a once off thing. so many quality breeders breed in avairy and have found no or little amounts of problems , so yee its worth a shot xx Elise xx
