so sorry to hear about your birds it sounds like some sort of poision if the quail died to hard to say without other information like was they mauled or anything again sorry to hear

Too hard for us to guess. Did you notice if any were sick ? or had pooey bottoms ? or were on the ground prior ? Was there water ( rain ) getting into the aviary ? Tunnels into aviary ? Rats will eat heads and heart and liver ....all you will find is half a body with no head if rats are at work..........rats tunnels in and out or rats still inside the aviary.

hi - thanks for your responses.

there was only some nibbling on a couple of the birds, the rest hadnt been touched. its a mystery! its been raising lots and yes the rain has been getting into the cage

we have had rat bait outside the cage but nothing inside. does seem it could be poison just not sure how!

Rats do real damage when they attack ... whereas when a bird dies sometimes the others will peck a bit at the carcass.

I'm leaning towards mass poisoning seeing as the quails died at the same time, do you live near an industrial site of some kind? Also ask about the neighborhood to see if anyone did any fumigation on the day in question.

Whatever you do don't put rat bait inside the aviary!

I am very sorry for your loss

The aviary floor being wet is extremely dangerous to birds. Wet seed and husks in the floor and in the feeders grow bacteria and mould really quickly. Also wet droppings spread disease and parasites far more quickly than dry droppings. Rodent urine and droppings is also extremely harmful.

Coccidiosis comes to mind due to the wet aviary floor........it will kill them in no time if it isnt noticed that they arent well. They can go to ground within hours once cocci is at work anhd dead in as manyb hours again. As Renee says the nibbling is from the other budgies as they do that sort of thing.

So Sorry to hear about your loss, weird that the quail's died to.... my only thought whould be either someone has used fumigation in your area and the wind has travelled it towards your aviary.... or the most logical seeing that it's been raining, is the seed went mouldy and created bacteria... in which the quail's will surely pick at all day.... so that's the most logical answer....

thats all right would the water have got into the bait outside and because of heavy rain washed into cage and birds have drank it would explain all birds at once and quick poisioning and death water laying around containing rat poision being the source because all birds drunk it the other dieseases tend to let the birds linger on a bit before they die according to what ive read whereas yours seem to have died straight away going on what i understand
