Well... Once Again I Could Not Help Myself

I've fallen victim once again .... i should be ashamed of myself to fall for such beautiful creature's.... i could not help myself..... but to buy a pair of ........REGENT PARROT'S!

Seeing that i'm going to organise my budgie's to be bred in cabinet's... i am going to put either 2 pair or 1 pair of regent parrot's in my aviary..... 2 pair will cost me $500 and 1 pair $250

About them going in an already used aviary... what should i take as precaution's.... before putting the regent's in the aviary on their own.... should i wait 6 week's? or should i let them go in the aviary.... budgie's come out tomorrow into cabinet's hopefully and then i'll be picking up the regent's tomorrow.

Any idea's on the best way to do this... and of course the safest way.

For those who do not know what a regent parrot is... Here is the Wikipedia link... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regent_Parrot

They are roughly the same size as a ringneck parrot... and are related to the superb parrot and the princess parrot...so they are indeed a considerably large bird...And here are some Pictures of the regent parrot, their are 2 type's... Yellow and Green... These are not actual picture's of the one's im getting, these are only google image's sample's.... No copywright intended to the owner's of these image's

I'm not a great believer of mixing different birds together in one aviary, but that being said I would do a complete clean and clean out of the aviary you intend to house your parrots - scrub the floors and inside walls.

Then if they are going to be on their own you can do the quarantine in that aviary.

Be very cautious you don't import an illness into your set up! Make sure there is no air flow from parrots to budgies. Some diseases are carried via feather dust on the wind.

They are really beautiful Matt.

When the budgies are out of the breeding cabinets....where will they go ?

Budgie's are moving... from the aviary to the cabinet's... that way it's not colonised... :thankyou:

BUT the question was.............when they ARENT in the cabinets.....where will they be ? They cannot live their life in the cabinets.

They will be inside my large blue cage that i have... it's about 1 metre tall and around 80 wide... so it's plenty of room for 8 bird's...

it wont be 8 bird's at a time in the 1 cage at once though... until it get's hot in summer.

I'm really excited about it :rip: ...i did extensive research on the Polytelis family which include's superb's, princess's etc....

I have found that they are prone to worm's... so as to that i will be THOROUGHLY cleaning out the whole aviary and replacing the surface completely by mushing up the soil and replacing it with sprout seed's for growth... my aviary's face north... meaning they get sunlight directly on the aviary from 6-10am and from 2-5pm so it's not a problem with light :D

I might even consider sand for the first 2 week's... i'll have to wait and see.

Here are the Photo's... The male is the one with more yellow...

I must say, I am Very impressed with the result's... they start breeding NOW to december....which mean's i'm going to have to go buy a large box and such... The previous owner said the regent pair had 2 nests last year.... 4 youngens from each nest... So as long as i pull the youngens out at 2 weeks they will have enough time for a second nest :)

They lay anywhere from 3-8 Egg's most commonly 4 or 5... Temperment is preety much the same to that of a princess parrot... quiet but still quiet frisky around humans... They are 5 year's old... I feed them fruit & Nut seed mix... which contains sunflower, Safflower, a bit of large millet.. and has oat's and a peices of dried fruit in the mix... And of course the occasional fresh fruit & veggies

Beautiful bird the Regent. Well done. I will get a pair of these one day when I get my fauna permit.

thye are very beautiful mattdog...is that the only colour you can get them? :)
