Posted July 26, 200916 yr Hello, i am a new member and have a few questions.I inherited 4 budgies about 6 months ago and i am enjoying them immensely.I am clueless with regards to the sex of them.There are 5 eggs in one of the nesting boxes and every now and then i find some on the bottom of the cage and they are cracked. Also the birds have been fighting and i found a dead one yesterday. Very sad. Can someone please enlighten me on why this is happening

You are colony breeding and there is fighting over possession of the nestboxes. You will have deaths of birds and smashed eggs and dead chicks. You have chosen the hardest way to try and breed budgies.
July 27, 200916 yr Hello and welcome. I agree with Kaz. Colony breeding is hard as you get hens who want the boxes and will kill the chicks to get it. There are also many other complications related to colony breeding. Are you able to post photos of how you have your aviary set up?

Hello Kaz,thanks for your reply.I dont know what colony breeding is and i am not a budgie breeder.The cage was given to me with boxes allready in there.I think there is now one male and two females.Came home today and another egg cracked with yolk everywhereHello and welcome. I dont know what colony breeding is and i am not intentionally breeding budgies.I dont have any pics.The birds are just in a standard cage with two nest boxes which were allready in there when i received them

Hello Kaz,thanks for your reply.I dont know what colony breeding is and i am not a budgie breeder.The cage was given to me with boxes allready in there.I think there is now one male and two females.Came home today and another egg cracked with yolk everywhere i have a solution for you take out the nest boxes the birds probbly fort over the hens and a cock was killed if you take out the boxes the hens will stop laying you can surf this sight learn some more and decide if you want to breed from then on or if you just want to keep them as pets and welcome keggy
