Posted April 15, 200520 yr Hi all, Just wanted to let you know whats been goin on here. Last summer i took in another unwanted budgie. Charlie *English Budgie* had been on his own for over a year. A young girl at the German forum i am in got in touch with me and asked if i would take him, well those who know me , know i dont hestiate when it comes to budgies. said done, charlie moved in. All went well till about Nov-Dec Charlie bekame ill. We had to take him to the Vet on Xmas day as he was throwing up seeds really bad. The Vet diagnosed Crop Inflamation, and we got Antibiotics for him. What i hadnt noticed was charlie didnt feed any of the other Birds. With 9 its a bit hard to watch all Since then, charlie has been to 3 different Vets, all said the same thing and the last one asked if charlie lived on his own, if he had a mirror. I explained he had lived in a cage with a mirror for the first yr of his life, and the vet said to watch him and check if he is feeding any of the others . He isnt, and this is the problem. A male naturally wants to feed others male or female but charlie only learned to feed 1) a mirror or 2) a plastik budgie. Because of this his crop is now damaged, i have had to seperate him from the others and his feeding is now a little Millet and some Biscuit a day. He has a special fluid to drink and some Meds i put in the fluid. He cant eat normal seeds any more just starts throwing them up after a while. Its terrible and breaks my heart to see this wee guy doing this. Me... the person against holding budgies on thier own has to keep one separated from the others to keep him alive and healthy Apart from all this, the Vet costs are very high. In all i have left about 300 Euros at the Vets and this only for charlie. So you guys be carefull with those mirrors and plastik friends okay
April 16, 200520 yr Oh, that is just heartbreaking. Bless you for taking him in, though, and giving him access to the veterinary care he so obviously needs. Is there any thought he will figure it out from watching the other birds? If he can feed the bird in the mirror, did the vet suggest putting one back in his cage?
April 16, 200520 yr Hi Rainbow, I had charlie in the Aivery for a few mnths. All seemed well and he seemed to get along with the others okay.Had even made 1 friend.(Tumi) Then all of a sudden he started throwing up seeds. No the vet said no mirror, or plastik friend, as this may cause bacteria(he had this at the beginning) I have tried putting Tumi in the cage with him, but he is not interrested at all, even attacks tumi My fear is the longer i keep him off normal seeds the harder it will be for him to digest, and he wont touch any sort of (soft) food. April 16, 200520 yr That is such a touching story Well done for keep on caring for him and spending 300 euros just to keep him alive :angel1: I didn't know a mirror could damage a budgies life, luckly Sparky had a mirror for only 2 weeks but I never saw him feeding it. It's a shame little Charlie has to be on his own and can't digest seed properly. I hope he gets better over time. (best wishes)
April 18, 200520 yr thanks sparky, charlie isnt completely on his own. Hes allowed out at night when i come home from work. We just have to watch he doesnt get into the Aviary, so as not to get to the the others seeds. Hes doing fine just now. Lets hope it stays that way. To tell you the truth, i dont think of money when it comes to my *babies*
