Follow Up On A Second Budge

Hi All

We welcome your opinions as we always have.

It has been awhile since I posted last....but we have a 14 - 16 month old female budgie (Benny) and I did post back in October last year

about us getting another budgie to help tame her....We took all your advice and tried everyday to help her to become a little more social

and accepting of us, but to date, we have had no such luck. We clipped her wings twice and I have chosen not to do this again.....

She is okay with our hands in and around cleaning her cage, she has little spurt flights every couple/few weeks or so around our dining area,

eating / drinking and poop is all good...she loves millet head

Thus, we now would like to know for companionship, would it be okay to introduce a second budgie..

This is purely, as we think that because maybe she has not bonded with us, as much as we would have liked, that she may be lonely???

(Theoretically, we are here, but she just doesn't want to socialise with us )

Just a couple of sub related questions too, if this would be okay in obtaining a second feathered friend

1. What gender is best to get

2. What age bracket

3. When can you put them into the same cage ( a new one will need to be purchased as Benny's is too small for two)

Appreciate your thoughts everyone

Cheers Kim & Benny

ps: please ask any questions that may pertain to our request or that a relative to this decision

i think another girl will cause them to fight..but i think a boy is better and they will form some sort of relationship....

2 females will not always fight, Anne aka Rainbow on our forums has all females and they do very well.

I always suggest getting the same sex birds therefore you don't have any mishaps with breeding accidently. Budgies yes can have recreational sex and not lay eggs but it is common for them to lay without a nestbox (if they have a male or if they don't). That is why I have choses males for my pet of budgie and when I got a companion I got another male.

I suggest you get a younger female around 4-6 months of age.

You will need to quarantine your new bird for 30 days before you introduce them.

In the FAQ's I wrote up an article on how to Introduce a new bird to the existing bird, find it and read it :party0011:, that is how I did it and had no problems.

If your cage is too small get the biggest one you can afford to fit 4-6 budgies if possible, the more remove they have the happier they are and reduced any fighting that may occur. You can find good size cages on e-bay, I got mine that way, we have a post in the FAQ about cages I suggest reading that over too :).

I hope that helps.
