How are they doing ? Have they got names ? Hewey Dewey and Louie ?

  • Author

They are doing well. They are in the crucial part of weaning. they are inside and away from their parents so things are a little tense here until i know that they will do alright when feeding themselves.

They do need names. suggestions appreciated

Will post more photos soon

Update time.... And yes need names for these three dusters :)

I love Quilla Kaz, Beautiful thank you...

This is Quilla. Quilla is a live wire and bolts around the cage. She can even climb the bars of the cage a bit and i caught her perching on the regular perch this morning. However with all her energy, she is not sustaining her food intake enough and requiring crop feeding.

These are the FD's full siblings from this season. There are 9 chicks in total and the outcomes are interesting.

These two siblings are from different clutches, they both have watery eyes, loose flights and "slow" in the head. Neither bird flys well and they both tend to stay on the flight floor. Their as doapy as the feather dusters but their feathers are not over growing.

These 4 siblings are perfectly fine. they have no feather, eye or intellect issues...

And the YF grey Opaline hen is the final chick.

the parents laid a further 4 eggs before i removed them from the cabinet... I have one that is showing fertile under a foster, but i tossed the others out before they coloured up.

had a haircut ?

Edited by KAZ

They're beautiful Liv, although it's sad they're feather dusters i'd gladly have them any time in my aviary :D Knowing me I'd probably even buy them haha!

By the way, Quilla looks like a cock?

By the look of the sibling you're doing well there Liv :( I can't wait until after the wedding so I can get back into my birds again! ^_^

Congratulations on the Dusters. Many believe that this is the sign of going too far with the feather..

Also I am sorry. Usually they don't last much past 3 months.

Not in this photo Kaz. I have just started trimming the feathers between the cere and eye on Quilla as he has them growing into his eye *OUCH*

Thank you Libby... he is a boy in those photos isn't he... should look more closely next time :) - but i still like Quilla... just dont tell him its a girls name :)

Thank you Daz. I will be sad when they leave us, but we still have 4 healthy siblings that we plan to breed with :)

I am considering clipping their wings... or trying with clipping one birds wings... as the long loose flights seem to be quite a hindrance to their movement and balance. Thoughts???

Liv, I'm sorry about the feather dusters...but they are very lovely birds. You mentioned there are other siblings that seem to have issues also, do you think this pair could be related in any way or just a bad combination of genes in the nest? Just wondering with all the different issues that have occurred, you don't normally see all that in the same clutch.

I don't see how clipping could hurt, i mean obviously they'll never be able to fly anyway, but for the sake of "lightening" their burden i'm sure it would work, although I doubt their blood supply is in the same parts of the feathers as normal birds so you'll have to be careful??

  • Author

The blood in the feather is only at the base... so clipping wont be a problem in that way. I think i will give it a go on one of the chicks and see if it will help with mobility :)

The parents are from two different breeders and do not contain the same breeders rings. They are probably from the same blood lines. i know the lines of the father, but have hit a dead end with the hens bloodlines.

You'll find that the gene's clicked... See how the other chicks feather up. If good, it might be definately worth another round from them.

  • Author

The parents have already had two rounds and are now resting... we plan to split the parents to different partners next season :P

Hi Liv, I,m{Eagle] still solo at the minute, for the best I think. Daddy is hopeless. But boy these feathered mummas look hot {there is a female?] Wanna hit me with one???

Liv, they are very lovely - and sad. Mobility is going to be important if they are to feed independently; and if they are runners, the trailing feathers will become soiled. You'll, therefore, have to do some trimming - rather than clipping, perhaps.

These birds remind me of farrah fawcett. Call one Farrah...

They are also in demand, $1000.00 each I reckon...

Oh, what lovely little things they are :( I dont think they could have been borne to a better carer!
