Having A Little Too Much Fun...

Hello, wow it has been a long time since I have posted!

I have three budgies, one male 18 months - Coco, one male about 9 months - Kif and one female about 9 months - Kimba.

Coco and Kif never got along very well together, until I put Kimba with them in January. Everything has been running along nicely until the other night when they were out and Coco and Kimba started to get a little frisky with each other. Now they seem inseparable every time they are out of the cage.

I am not looking to breed, and don't have anything in the cage that can be used for nesting.

Is this something that I need to worry about or is it just budgie behaviour?

Hi there Tam :(

Sounds like Coco and Kimba have bonded. its normal for budgies to bond closly to one another. There is nothing wrong with them bonding and it wont lead to any breeding if they dont have a place to nest. Budgies have been known to hunt out places in the home to nest in so be careful she doesnt start looking outside the cage. For now i wouldn't worry.

Also just like we advise for those that have single budgies make sure you are giving them enough cover time, for those getting frisky it is recommended to keep them covered for 12-14 hours for at least 2 weeks, and then 10-12 hours regularly, birds have cycles and it based on daylight hours being longer, running water around or near the cage.

if they dont have a place to nest, they generally will not lay......

Liv has a cockatiel called kimba also B)

Thank you everybody for your replies. They have calmed down a bit now thank goodness!

Yes, I stole the name Kimba from Liv

Can you tell me a little more about this please? My boy is rooting for Australia...even though he is a single bird (let's just say he thinks his toys are his girlfriends)...is it because he isn't getting enough sleep?

I can be... Its also the time of the year. the days are getting longer, spring is in the air, and its quite normal for a boy to be randy. If you want the behaviour to stop, try giving him about 13-14 dark hours of sleep, and change his toys around. If the behaviour is not an issue for you, then its not unhealthy to leave it be. You can still change his cage around and give him some different toys to help take his mind off his "girlfriend"

Thanks **Liv** - good info there. I am changing his toys around but he's amorous with anything smaller than him, my little Romeo :thankyou: . Will try putting him to bed a little earlier see if that discharges some of his urges.

Thanks again!
