I just got home and found out that my parents and brother scared a hawk away today. It was hangin on the front of my cages and 20 minutes after they scared it away it was back it sits on the gutter for 10 minutes then on top of the cage for about 5 then latchs onto the front of the cage(im guesin to try and bite its way through the wire). im getting really worried it will be able to bite through the wire and massacre my birds. Does anyone know how i can get it to go away?? im goin to be putting up old CDs outside tomorro morning.

The hawk will keep coming back now it knows about your birds. Its not biting through wire you have to worry about.....a hawk can kill birds that hang on the wire by piercing them with its talons. You will have to put bird netting up all around and extended out from your aviary so it doesnt get close.

Bunnings :D

PS a show breeder I know lost three birds in one strike when a hawk hit the aviary wire and sank its talons into the birds on the wire.

Yes, Bunning's is one... i particularly do not like their outrageous price's though.... try the yellow page's and find netting business or something... that way they can come out with the net, put it up. and it's a stress free process.

Matt a netting company if there is one would cost way more than a pack of bird netting from bunnings :D

Actually, you would be surprised kaz, depending on the patio size company's who are specialized in netting and such would be cheaper. but yes it costs alot more for them to come and put it up... but as i said, it's less stress having them do it professionally

I dont know how i am goin to hang it but because the top of the patio is gyprocked and the total perimeter of the patio is like 15m x 8m. I will go out and buy some of that tomorro. hopefully it wont be to expensive. sorry guys its not the avairy its my breeding cages they are made in a block of 6 out of melamine and have only one side with wire.

Then maybe you can somehow stick a see through netting in front of the breeding cage's... wait and see what the CD's do first... if not... im sure you can sort something out

i got a better idea you ring fishery's and wild life the usually come and collect the bird (trap it and then relise it or house for its safety )

i had a sea eagle once for two weeks so i rang them and explained the situation

my sea eagle went to hills vile sentry as thy a rear species well where i lived they were :D

if you in country amongst farms then i suggest buying a fer rabbits and have them lose in yard they will take the rabbits over birds it works

also it wont stay more that two weeks but will always come back every few months so i belive you need to ring my first suggestion

Yea i will wait and see. I am kinda worried as well because i have a 2 day old chick in the nest and i dont want the parents to become to scared and abandon the chick or just throw it out cause they are scared.

They should be fine. As long as the hawk doesnt carry on and scare the living jeeps out of them it shouldnt disturb the parents with the chick.

Yea GB that is a good(no wait a great) idea i didnt think of that i will see if it is hangin around tomorro if so i will give them a call. But the bird netting would be good to have too.

yea im not gunna (hopefully) well i will be up early(early for school holidays anyways) in the morning to check fingers crossed we dont see him again

Oh you will, as kaz said he will keep coming back now that he knows the birds are their.

he will be back 4 am on ward

you may not see him till avo again

try black plastic over top of aviary or ever a blanket put holes each edge and weigh it down with bricks

then with soft wire add another one to make a blanket cover as big as needed pushing the wire in and out by hand like a needle

op shop has good ones so long he cant see them any more its all good buyed you time to make or bye something permanent

good thing they territorial so will only be dad looking for food for mum she will have a nest and it wont be far away either

Would leaving a radio on near the cage help? I know my parrots respond to human and animal noises and voices from speakers. Just a thought. I know my budgies love the radio.

you could also tie colorful balloons around the aviary area

this also would work the dont have to b so close that the frighten birds helium ones would work best

yeah hawks are annoying me as well they petrify my birds and stay on the open bit of the avary roof :(

My hubby feeds ours - the logic being it is so full of prime steak it doesn't have room for fat little budgies. :thanks:

Well there was vey good news today the hawk didnt come back we left the outside ceiling fan on. and i made the top of the cages look unstable buy throwing an old donna cover over it.

i could imagine hawk feathers everywhere..... still if the hawk got hurt that would be quite sad it is a beautiful part of oz's wildlife
