Posted July 14, 200915 yr I have 4-5 budgies in a quarantine cage .............4 hens and one cock. A few days ago one of the hens was looking a bit sick,.............dropped wings, hunched appearance. I was watching her but she seemed to not get any worse. Yesterday I checked her all over especially checked to see if maybe she was carrying an egg and she had no egg where it should have been if she was about to lay. This morning she was on the floor of the cage but when I reached in for her she happily got up on the perch. At this evenings feeding and checking of all the birds, she was laying on the ground of the quarantine cage with the cockbird, a dommie pied fussing all over her, feeding her, preening her and making a big fuss in general. In all honesty she looked like she was dying I reached in to grab her up and check what was going on and when I lifted her up, she was sitting on an egg. Goes to show, some of these guys will acchieve breeding even at great odds. I popped the egg in a foster nest and when I checked back to the spangle mother and dommie pied father of the egg, they were all over each other like a rash  so......what the heck I put them in a breeder cabinet to finish what they had started. I wouldnt normally put a dommie pied and spangle together, but these guys seemed determined. Here is the hen with her egg under her after I stole her egg and the guilty father
July 14, 200915 yr You gifted him as the "guilty father" he's a VERY nice dommie pied... you will most likely get spangles though, which isnt so bad cause i've got a full nest of spangles right now as well  ... Edited July 14, 200915 yr by mattdog2
July 14, 200915 yr Author You gifted him as the "guilty father" :what: he's a VERY nice dommie pied... you will most likely get spangles though, which isnt so bad cause i've got a full nest of spangles right now as well ... Both spangle and dominant pied are dominant genes.......you can end up with both and also with spangle dom pieds......you cant show a spangle dom pied.
July 15, 200915 yr Both spangle and dominant pied are dominant genes.......you can end up with both and also with spangle dom pieds......you cant show a spangle dom pied. Even though you couldn't show the spangle dom pied offspring, would I be correct in assuming that if it was a nice bird, you could put it back to a normal to get spangles and dominant pieds (no spangle pieds....)....???
July 15, 200915 yr a couple of months ago when i paired my skyblue hen and green normal cock, they were only just placed in the breeding cage, and i hadnt put their box in yet, and a couple of days passed and i thought the same thing about her as you did Kaz!! but i thought it was strange because she was in great breeding condition two days prior. its amazing what lengths they go too. Beautiful looking spangle, and im not a big fan of pieds(only dom pied), and your domn pied is absolutely beautiful. ive been after a good dom pied like that for ages. very nice Kaz

July 15, 200915 yr Author are these new editions Kaz? Who was the breeder of these birds? Carl Alder is the breeder of these birds........the same breeder who I have posted the for sale budgies here on BBC. These guys are just finishing up quarantine.
July 20, 200915 yr Author UPDATE.......2 nearly 3 eggs in the nestbox and the first one in the foster nest.
July 21, 200915 yr I hope they colour up. I love dominant pieds AND spangles!! You should get some dominant pieds, some normals and some spangles and some dominant pied spangles = equils beautiful babies ( maybe with some added length )
