Posted July 14, 200915 yr Recently my 3 year old budgie's cere has changed from a pink to a light brownish pink . It's not all over his cere, it's mostly just under his nostrils. The area above his nostrils is a whitish pink, which makes him look like he's actually a girl, but he is definitely a boy. I'll try to get some pictures in the next day or too, when my dad returns home with the camera. He looks and is acting perfectly healthy, but I am just wondering what this could be, or if this is actually anything to worry about? There is no build up on his cere. I've read that if a boy budgies cere goes brown its a sign of testicle cancer? His cere hasn't gone brown though, its just change from a picture to a whitish brownish pink I should be able to get some photo's by tomorrow.
July 14, 200915 yr Author I am not expert on telling the sex of budgies, but many people have told me his male, and he gets jiggy with his toys ALOT Here is a picture of him that I took in Feburary: He also talks very well, which I've been told is more of a boy thing, and doesn't bite very hard.
July 14, 200915 yr Author I am pretty sure he's male, although sometimes I have my doubts. I am sure when I can get a picture it'll clear some things up, and I am pretty sure it's nothing to be concerned about, but you never know
July 14, 200915 yr Brown cere in males usually indicates testicular cancer doesnt it? Can do and can just indicate a hormonal imbalance.
July 14, 200915 yr Author Brown cere in males usually indicates testicular cancer doesnt it?Can do and can just indicate a hormonal imbalance.Well, I wouldn't say that his cere is brown, it's just a colour that is unusual.. its more a dark red colour. Very hard to explain. So once I can get a picture, I'll post it. Edited July 14, 200915 yr by Hannah
July 14, 200915 yr dark red? never seen that before.... picture's would be great when you have them
July 14, 200915 yr Author Well, dark red may be a bit over the top  Going to go pester my sister about her camera. Edited July 14, 200915 yr by Hannah
July 14, 200915 yr Hehe, I still agree with male... i cannot see a hen being turned out from that type of cere that he had in Jan, but as you said about the white... it could still be a hen, we will know for sure once photo's are up, good luck pestering your sister
July 14, 200915 yr Author Had a closer look at his cere just then. The area around his nostrils is a white colour and the area underneath and in between his nostrils is a dark pinky red colour. Unfortunately they'll be no photo's till tomoorow as my sister camera is charging so I can't use it.
July 14, 200915 yr White indicates hen... this is a real toughie.... it might be a hen coming into mature (non-breeding condition) you SURE it's 3 yr old? And yes it's too late for photo's now so leave it till tomorrow  Edited July 14, 200915 yr by mattdog2
July 14, 200915 yr Author Yup. I am sure he's 3 years old. I bought him on the 3rd May 2006 I'll have pictures first thing tomorrow morning. Hopefully he'll let me take some good pictures, he wasn't to happy with me looking at his cere before
July 14, 200915 yr Kaz correct me if im wrong but i remember seeing somewhere that a certain mutation keep's the pink cere.... maybe this budgie has it?
July 14, 200915 yr Kaz correct me if im wrong but i remember seeing somewhere that a certain mutation keep's the pink cere.... maybe this budgie has it? Yes certain mutations such as the recessive pied we are talking about do keep their pink cere. What I did notice is that when Pretty was more in breeding condition for a male his cere would become a deeper pink maybe this is what is happening. But you said you see brown is that actually on the cere or above the nostrils on the feathers (which can indicate respiratory issues). From the picture I see he looks male.

July 14, 200915 yr Author In taking a closer look, don't think there is any brown colour on his cere, but I am still not 100% sure. It's definitely turned into a darker pink, and the area leading from his nostrils to the corners of his cere at the top are white. Pictures are coming soon :what:
July 14, 200915 yr really??? if so then it might be a hen also...... Elly, kaz or whoever read's this next, what do hen's keep in the cere when they are recessive?
July 14, 200915 yr Recessive hens are the same as any hens..........whitish pink when not in condition and brown when they are. Recessive cocks have pink ceres at all times.
July 14, 200915 yr Here is Pretty in Breeding Condition Her is a bird of Kaz's, a female Lacewing just like the Recessive Pied the cere stays pink in the male but this is a hen Here is the whole post that is in the FAQ http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....showtopic=14978
