He's about 5-8 years old, never been handled before, I've had him living with me for about 8 months and during that time he seems to be quite comfortable with me being in the room and changing their water / food. I am thinking about taming him a little bit more but don't want to frighten him too much because he's older. Is this a good idea or should I leave him be? Could I try putting my finger near him for 10 minutes or so everyday?

i got a hen from the aviary and i just leave the door open for her when im around and its safe

its been 3 weeks now and she comes out when she thinks im not paying atention

she goes back after a little walk about and just sits their with door open

 

birds tame themselfs we just incorage them that their safe :glare:

In the FAQ there is a taming article that can be used for both young and older birds I would start there and see what you can use to help the process of trust along. The biggest thing is gaining their trust so forcing them to do anything they don't want to do is a no no especially with hands.

Yes it is possible to tame him. It just takes alot of patience and gaining his trust. Once you gain his trust he will be more easier to work with. l tamed 2 budgies who where around 2 years of age. It took me almost 6 months to gain their complete trust. All budgies are different, some will respond quicker to you while others are slower.

If he has favourite nibbles like millet or spinach etc, try to coax him with them. Food is one of the ways to get to a budgies heart. This could eventually lead to him having to stand on your hand to eat the food. If it works you can progress by putting the cage in an enclosed room, with covered windows of course, and leave your hand, and the food, in his sight just out side the door.
