Posted July 9, 200915 yr Hello everyone, While looking at Kaz's Babies photos a while ago I noticed she was using Porridge Oats as a nesting material. However another member then said they weren't good for the eggs. Has anyone else heard this and would advise not to use them, Or are they safe to use? Thanks nitsuD
July 9, 200915 yr I was also told they are not good for the eggs... i dont remember who it was, but i didnt have any trouble with it when i used them Use the quick oats as they are softer than the rolled oats

July 10, 200915 yr i started useing them and i been mixing 3 crushed weatbix to each nest box also to use less oates seens to work good only probblem i have with them it the price and fact that each pack only does 3 boxes when you clean theses boxes every few days this gets very expencive how often do other clean the boxes with the otes when chicks hatch i was doing dayly but cut back to every second cause of cost
July 10, 200915 yr It depends really. I find some nests have poos that seem to never stick to the chicks feet or beaks or anything, those nest boxes i would only clean out once or twice weekly. Others, where every single poop seems to find its way onto the chicks it seems i have to change the nesting material regularly to prevent this. Its a preference i suppose. One might argue that you cant let poop build up, but think of the wild nests. I personally have not seen or heard why you have to clean nestboxes daily or even every second day. I think its a balance between cost, willingness on your part and whether or not its even necessary based on each individual nest.
July 10, 200915 yr I leave the nesting materials pretty much alone until the chicks get to age 2-3 weeks and then I start adding seed so they learn to eat. I dont clean nestboxes out every few days at all...it isnt necessary Edited July 10, 200915 yr by KAZ
July 10, 200915 yr cool so i should keep my cleaning frenzy in house lol well i find the poop builds up under the otes so i clean it as so it does not get mouldy but i will stress less a tad thanks guys
