okay i just went out and got 2 pairs of budgies and i need all the information about breeding them that i can i have had budgies before and decided i would like to breed them

Hi John 1612,

Welcome :P

Click on the FAQ section of the forum, there is a wealth of information there.....

well where do i start! it really depends on WHERE your breeding them HOW your breeding them. okay so im assuming you already know they have to BOTH be in breeding condition for them to breed. how old are they are they older than a year and younger than 5 ? are they in perfect condition, eating well, bright and alert , no scaley face, worms , the works. are you colony breeding them or selectivlly breeding them? are you breeding more than one pair for foster parents? if something goes wrong would you be willing to pay expenses and giving up your time? what will you be doing with the babies once fledge? are you selling them if you are make sure you know WHERE and make sure they want them, just to remind you you really wont be a millionare with selling budgies to pet shops  i dont want to put you up on the spot or put you of breeding i just want the best outcome for your birds. sorry if this didnt help but YOU have to tell us somethings about whats going to happen before WE can advise you in some strategies and ways for the best outcome. and lol i hope this didnt sound like a lecture. xx Elise xx

and its really worth the effort when you are able to experience new life , i only just started breeding but i had researched for a year and just when you think you know enough another thing pops up. i hope you enjoy breeding almost as much as i do.

Great Post lilbabybudgies

i agree with liv.. we love to see photos and some guys might be able to tell you some info about the birds...if they are old enough or not and all that stuff  and along the way we can show you how to breed and notice these things... here are a few checks you can do before you reply...

With some varieties you can tell how old the bird is....if the bird has full black eyes, or the bars along its head are extending all the way to the nostrils or cere... this is a sing of it being a few months old...Some varieties such as recessive pieds, have allblack eyes through out their life...

If the fleshy part of the nostrils is blue, its a boy, if it is nutbrown its a girl B) . If the bird has neither of these colours either the bird is young or the birds variety is special :( ...

Hope this helps in some way but it would be nice to ahve some photos!!! By the way welcome to the forum! and lilbabybudgies has a good point... things like scaly fqace and stuff should be checked... you can search the forum for information on such illnesses or type it in google

Indeed, photo's would be great, their's so many thing's we can tell you about it... it's color, mutation, scaly face, feather disease and such....(not that your bird's have it, just making a point as to what we can see in budgie's)

In my signature there is a link on how to post pictures :D

That is a lovely pair. they are still very young. only about 4 months old or so. They have some more growing and maturing to do, and should be ready to breed around the new year :(

They look very VERY similar. is it possible they are brother and sister???

These two appear to be both females if the white on the cere is like that in real life. It seems you may have used a flash in taking the photo which alters perception of colour to a degree and makes it harder to see real cere colours. Young also.

SUGGESTION.........if you are keen to begin breeding and you have bought birds that are too young, buy in a pair or two of OLDER budgies........12 months to 4 years and breed with them while you wait for the others to grow.

how can i be sure the birds i am buying are old enough ... what can i look for in the birds?

Fully coloured ceres, white iris rings on any type that will have iris rings ( recessive pieds dont have visible iris rings )....thats a start.....they may still be be under 12 months though.

Better still buy from a breeder who has records of their hatch date and the birds have legrings. If you can buy birds with legrings green rings will be old enough to breed and some black ringed birds too depending on the part of the year they were bred.

***********IGNORE the legring colour advice. as you are in canada your legring colours will be different to australia.

hi welcome to the forum... try to by from a breeder to get a specific age unless you have a really good pet shop like mine with heaps of birds.

k well i will try to use the advise but as far as i know there are no breeders in my area only pet stores who get there birds shipped to them

Dont rely on any pet store to give you good or truthful advice on either ages or sex of budgies.....they mostly tell you what you want to hear :D
