Funny Leg

Featured Replies

One of my female budgies has a funny leg. Her toes are swollen and she is not using them. Her leg is very swollen and has a large red and black painfull looking lump on it. Since she got this problem she is not moving much, has heavy breathing and poo stuck around her bottom.

Any help would be good.

Thanks

Sounds like she has a broken leg. The black will either be dried blood or the tissue dying due to lack of blood circulation. She needs to go to the bird vet as soon as possible.

Poop stuck to her bottom means she is sick and in distress, you need to remove it and wash her bottom.

She needs the vet pretty urgently.

I'm sorry I can't help you, but I would get her to an avian vet ASAP.

I agree that she needs to see an avian vet asap. Aside from possibly being a broken leg, her joint could be infected. Since the blood can't get past the lump, her toes become swollen. Because she looks so outwardly sick, this might suggest that the infection could be spreading. It could have started from the leg and spread to other places causing heavy breathing and runny poos (the heavy breathing could be from pain alone if it's just a broken leg). Or, it could have started from somewhere else and spread to the leg. Any infection can continue to spread and affect her without an appropriate antibiotic. I really think you should see an avian vet as soon as you can.

Make sure you use and avian vet not just a regular vet that sees dogs and vets and the occasional bird. When you can make sure you ask if they are an avian vet and see birds daily.

Keep us updated.

if it is a broken leg the vet will need to amputate the leg as it sounds like it has died

i had to amputate one my birds legs as it died after being splinted afew days latter the vets was not open and i took it apon myself to save him as as blood poisoning had accrued

I KNEW WHAT I WAS DOING i did not just chop some birds leg off

i had proper surgical equipment and everything prepared before i proceeded also the bird was taken to vet for proper treatment where he did commend me for saving my little mans life

it cost me 80 dollors to have his whole bone removed and he had stitches for 10 days

he is alive and happy flying in aviry as if nothing happened

so do not let you vet tell you that nothing can be done as it can

and at not much price for your birds life

and DONT WASTE TIME GETTING HIM HER TO VET BLOOD POISINING THROUGH A DEAD LIMB CAN BE FATEL AND THE PAIN AND SUFFERING VERY STRESFUL

BUT do not give your bird human pain killers as this will cause its death

I took her to a vet today. The vet specialised in birds but also treated other animals so he was not exactly an avian vet. Her leg was'nt broken, just cut and very badly infected. He gave her a needle with some sort of infection fighting medicine. The vet said she should have a full recovery in 2 weeks.

Thanks everyone for all the help.

Wonderful, keep an eye on it though. The leg should show signs of improvement within 48 -72 hours if you don't see improvement or it gets worse do call them back. Please keep us updated.

wonder how much they "charged" for a shot of medicine  good new's though, could have been ALOT worse if you left it for any longer.

I dont think there is any major improvement yet but her leg is definatly less swolen. She was sleeping on the ground yesteray and had lots of poop stuck to her bottom but I cleaned that off and she seemed happier after that. It was $60 for the treatment. I really hope she recovers.
