Hello all,

I have just purchased my childrens first pet after our praying mantis passed. only live one season

im guessing its a Cinnamon ... hoping someone could help me identify what family of budgie (colour) and sex it is....

It according to the pet store it seems to still be a baby but i could be wrong...

still trying to learn about it all.

well enough talk .... introducing FOOFIE

bird026.jpg bird011.jpg

bird034.jpg

He/she seems to be settling in well as the freaking out stopped within about 5 minutes of getting home.

We have Foofie in the family/kids/kitchen area where there is always traffic.

The kids are under strict orders not to scream and run around the cage as it will make the bird go crazy... seems to be working so far.

Foofie has been chirping all day apparently and doesnt seem to be worried about me putting my hand in the cage and giving he/her a gentle stroke...

Id like to have Foofie tamed eventually so will get started on some research..

Any advice or opinions welcome. you all seem like a straight up bunch.. look forward to getting to know you all.

Ian

Hi HUMBLE and welcome to our forum :( Foofie is gorgeous and is a little girl budgie.

Thanks Kaz.

Im assuming its a girl because of the ceres (I think) not being coloured???

Any chance on a rough age??

Also would SHE :( be Cinnamon??

My plan is to see how it goes with Foofie and then hopefully one day (far away) become breeder... maybe Foofie could be a Hen in a few years

Thanks

Ian

Foofie is young as her bars go right down to cere, making her around 6-9 weeks old, and her markings are cinnamon. Foofie is a girl because of the amount of white on her cere. If Foofie was a boy the cere would be a purply pink.

Very cute, you have 1 more day if you want to enter her picture in the Budgie of the Month :(, under the Competition Section. What color are Foofie's eyes?

she seems to be happily sleeping right now so cannot confirm but 98%sure they are black.

I have just spent the last few hours reading the FAQ's and im horrified that i may have frightened her by stroking her :(.

Thanks Elly, i might pop a couple of pics in the comp and see how she goes

Really nice budgie, she seems very sweet and also the photos and the way you describe the events remind me of when i first got my Charlie.

Look after her, she's a lovely bird.

:P

Thank you.....I will most definately....

Recessive pied cinnamon green hen :D Charming wee thing!

Now how did you tell that she's a Recessive pied cinnamon green hen?

I cannot seem to grasp the method of defining budgies?

teach me please.. :D

Edited by humble

im not sure if i agree thats a recessive pied.... but i sort of see why i could think that..

On the first picture on the side of foofie there seems to be a small dark patch there, and that colour is olive green. Its a very nice bird.

Welcome humble!

Definitely a little "she" budgie and as Dean says she's a recessive pied cinnamon green hen (she might be grey green or olive green looking at the colour of the green patch on her).

There is quite a bit of information under the genetics and mutations heading with lots of pics of different varieties of birds. Look for "Pictures of Members Recessive Pieds" something like that anyway. There are examples of other varieties there too and a description of the standards that apply to the show birds in the different varieties.

Thank you for the kind comments....

A little update....

It seems that Foofie figured out that " because the big dude that gives me water and food puts his hand through that moving thing in the wall it must also be a way out."

What you say??

Well to my surprise whilst putting the kids to bed we were visited by a "little birdy".

She has obviously been busy when we're not home figuring out her escape route.... too much prison break i think.....

Well it was a good time to get her back in the cage when i realised that she was settling down in my hand....

I took her to the bathroom and thought right trainig starts here....

So she sat on my hand for a while and flew off a couple of times because i startled her but when i got her back on my had she was okay.... nervous but okay....

Got some photos which ill post soon...

Cheers

Ian

aw sweet, good luck!

About the breeding, you will be able to breed her when she is about 12 months old. If you do, choose a good mate for here!

Your in the right place

Well to my horror i got home today and Foofie and her cage were nowhere to be found :fear :fear

I asked my wife where she was and the reply i got was..." Damm bird pooped all over my bench and the carpet so i let her go and the cage is in the garage"

I freaked out and my kids immediately said " its okay Daddy, she making friends now"... the freaking esculated...

My 3yr old daughter then said Daddy come and see if she is still outside.... taking me to the patio.....

I was gobsmacked to find that Foofie did in fact make some new friends in the new AVIARY.... :hooray: :hooray: :) :bliss:

My wife had spoken to our lovely neighbour who had approximately 38 budgies about our new addition to the family....

Sheryl (neighbour) told her that she had an aviary that she no longer used so we could have it....

She also gave us a breeding pair and a lone male.... AWSOME. the breeding pair are apparently not old and last lay produced 3 albino's...

I could not take any pics as it was dark so this will be done tomorrow.

God i love my wife.... damm woman is the best.......

Ian

Aviary.......fantastic :)

Unfortunately what isnt fantastic is adding Foofie to an aviary with other birds that have not been quarantined away from each other.

Also if the aviary comes with nestboxes.......Foofie will breed at too young an age merely by the presence of the nestingboxes.

Foofie needs to be removed from the aviary. Foofie is still young and has not built up any immunities yet, and the new birds could be carrying hidden disease, despite what the neighbour may have said.

Sorry to burst your bubble  Putting birds together with no quarantine is bad bad news.

Thanks Kaz,

I probably shoudl have mentioned that first thing i did was remove her from the aviary... especially to continue her training...

Having owned fish im very paranoid about quarantine....
