Posted June 29, 200915 yr Hi Guys, My head hurts.... I have been reading the forums - FAQ's for hours...... Q.1 Am I right in thinking that (for me) no matter what the mutations are of the birds I have at the moment we can only make an educated guess on what the offspring will turn out like?... for newbies like myself that have no idea what the parents are of my birds, that when bred they could throw anything? Where is you guys know the mums and dads - grand parents - great grandparents with most of yours?? Is this a big factor in breeding colours/mutations that you want in your flocks? how far does it go back to make a difference to now?? Not that this is bad - suprises are great......for me anyway... Q.2 Please explain what "TYPE1" and "TYPE2" are?? Thanks in advance to those that help me understand.......yep I'm blonde!!
June 29, 200915 yr 1- Well, knowing the mutations of the birds you have we can make a very educated guess. Though depending on what their parents were, they may be split for things that you will not expect until they have bred. So yes, they can basically throw almost anything. They know the lineage of their birds (I'm talking about the show breeders on here, the pet type owners usually don't know back that far) because they need to, to know what kind of chicks they will get (more appearance wise that colour) and who to pair to who for what they are looking for. Someone who breeds show budgies could explain that a whole lot better. It only really matters who the parents of your budgies were..if you know that then you know what they are split for..though there is a tiny chance if one of the parents was split for something that one of your birds may also be split for it..but that's a very small chance, depending completely on what the parents were. Good that you like suprises, because chances are you'll get them if you don't know what the splits are of your birds. 2- Are you talking about type 1 and type 2 yellowface? If so..Type 1 is where the yellow is restricted to the face only, the rest of the bird is blue..Type 2 is where the yellow is in the face and bleeds yellow into the body colour, turning most of the bird green. June 30, 200915 yr Knowing the parent's of our birds can help a lot when predicting the offspring but recessive genes can be carried for many generations the pop up unexpectedly when paired to the right mate. Usually it much easier to tell what colours or mutations a pair can't produce. Here are a few examples: A pair of blue birds can't produce a green chick A pair of normals can't produce a dominant pied or any other dominant mutation A pair of opaline's can't produce a normal A lutino cock can't produce any female chicks that are not either lutino, albino or lacewing A non-opaline hen cannot be the mother of a male opaline chick
June 30, 200915 yr Put up a picture of your pair of birds and we can all look at the varieties you are putting together and have a guess at some probable outcomes. (Ofcourse, the recessive varieties may make an appearance, but surprises are good.)
